He was a believer in hard work, self appointed, great motivation, hell-raiser, meant well, wanted to win and seeminly cared for his boy... Aside from being zany and high strung, he guided Johnny Ruiz to the WBA title... I gotta respect him for that....

Never thought I'd ever see Alton Merkeson annoyed or the slightest bit aggressive, he just didn't seem the type, calm and gentle; he'd seen war, and survived, nothing could push him any more.

    Then he met Norman Stone.

Love how people like to talk **** about the man.

He brought Johnny up to a championship, and more importantly, he's done work with amateur kids over the years, training many kids for free. But I guess you guys don't know about that.

The rare breed that gets the most out of the least. Just how many others really pull that kind of thing off? And one thing he always did was to not have his guys enter the ring cold and stale. They were sweated up and ready to go & how often do we see guys come into the ring dry as a bone?

I loved it when Stoney called referee Randy Neuman a "Jerk Off" and got the big 86....

    Good question

Like, has he ever boxed? If so amateur only or professional as well?

What other fighters, if any, has he trained besides John Ruiz?

I have never heard of any others besides Johnny

I just wanted to know what his qualifications were. Did he box? Win any titles? work with any great trainers? Produce any other fighters?

I don't care for any of his antics. But that's separate from my question above.

Let's not overestimate Stone, at least using Ruiz as a basis. Without King's influence, Ruiz would never have gotten the ratings he did, and never gotten the blind eye toward his illegal holding tactics that allowed him to "beat" more talented fighters at the world class level.
