I feel De La Hoya sometimes displayed good defensive moves but couldn`t set up his right hand well at all, what were his other flaws?

This ,in a nut shell by the middle round s he could start blowing . His work rate dropped , cost him a couple of fight s imo .

After Jesus Rivero was fired, his biggest weakness was a succession of big name trainers that tried to make him into something he was not.

This is what I thought as well. i believe he had a total of 8 trainers over his career. That is changing the recipe on a dish 8 times. When Rivero was his trainer Rivero concentrated on boxing, but then whatever 'advisors' Oscar had told him you should be knocking these guys out, so out went Rivero. When Gil Clancy trained him, Clancy told him to coast the last few rounds against Trinidad, unlike his fast finish against Quartey, and that cost him the fight and out went Clancy. Freddie Roach trained him for Mayweather and after winning three rounds on the trot with the jab he goes back slugging which mayweather loved so he could counter-punch, and of course, it cost Oscar the fight. Was this Freddie's doing? I don't know who advised Oscar half the time, but he never seemed to have one voice in that corner.

Good points but he was 8-10 years past prime. Anyway you slice it, he gases anyway and Floyd dominates him 2nd half of the fight imo

As has been said, the merry-go-round of trainers and tension related stamina issues definitely dogged him. He lacked a top class right hand and was heavily dependent on his left although it was an absolute wand at his best thrown with excellent technique and speed, especially the hook. I always felt Oscar was a bit upright and stiff in general despite very good basic fundamental technique in some aspects. Not the best ring general either or with a top end ring IQ and lacking in a few nuances.

His strengths were his speed, chin, good power, solid footwork and outstanding left hand.

Stood straight up. Lack of lateral movement. Defense was adequate but not great.

Yeah, he often looked quite stiff, almost robotic in the way he threw his punches.

Was he actually a great fighter? He was borderline great in my view.

He just lost one too many of his big fights:
    Trinidad
    Mosley
Hopkins (he gets a pass for this one, though)
    Mayweather
    Pacquiao

Was Rivero the defensive minded trainer he had for the fights with Chavez? I feel his defense was at it`s best against Chavez, I think he fired Rivero because he fought to defensively v Whitaker or something, is that right?

He was with Rivero for 8 fights; he won all of them, 6 by ko. Whitaker and Miguel Angel Gonzalez went the distance so Rivero was fired because Oscar was getting highlight reel Kos. I believe that the Gonzalez fight was the best performance of Oscar's career.

    Spoons.

We didn't know it then, but we know it now.

His biggest weakness was for a curvy, polished, silver spoon.
