He had only one weakness “discipline”despite his mechanical flaws which really weren’t an issue when he was at the top that was it he was an almost perfect specimen every gift a fighter could ask for.
While I wouldn't call him "chinny" I find it weird, he missed out on all the big punchers, when their was a surplus of them to choose from.
I used to think this but he fought Lionel Butler, who could really whack, in his pro debut. Also, Bert Cooper was no slouch in the power department. Bowe faced him inside two years of turning pro. I have revised my opinion on this. He didn't fight all the big hitters but he faced a few and took real risks while he was still a fledgling pro.
In fairness, Bowe fought Butler in his pro debut when Lionel was 0-1, I'd hardly call that a real risk.
Fair enough. Doesn't alter the fact Butler could really hit, though. It was a risk. Bowe (Newman) just didn't know he was taking it.
He had it all physically. Bowe had a complete set of tools. His weakness was dedication and discipline.
Bert Cooper was a very strong puncher and at the time he fought Bowe he was clean and fighting at his most dangerous. Riddick just made short work of him. Herbie Hide was supposed to be a good slugger.
Cooper and Hide failed to demonstrate their power against elite opposition so I don't see how they can be considered dangerous punches at top level. Carl Williams beat Cooper but nobody would say he had a great chin. Tyson a puncher proven against top level opposition made quick work of him. Bowe fought only 3 guys in his career I would classify as world class and two of them Golota and Holyfield dropped him.
He actually signed to fight Ray Mercer but Mercer screwed up when he lost lost his next fight. Tyson made zero attempts to fight him. I'll give you the Lewis duck. Either way this is a false equivalency. Him not having many big punchers on his resume isn't proof that he was chinny. If he was, Hide, Holyfield, and Cooper would have knocked him out.
