Someone stated 'The technical areas where Leonard could have improved were blocking and slipping jabs and straight rights.' I s this true and if so what other flaws did Ray have in his prime?

I agree that his propensity to ship a little more leather than was ideal was his only real flaw as a fighter. That's not to say he was easy to hit, or that his defence was average per se. Only that it was average in comparison with the rest of his game, which was pretty damn impressive in just about every other area.

But a Welterweight Leonard was up there with the best pure fighting specimens the sport has ever seen. Lightning fast, tough and durable, could adapt to and employ different styles in order to win, good power, brilliant natural athlete, good movement, great variety of punches and combinations etc. When you've got all that going for you, you can afford to have a merely solid, rather than top notch defence.

I can't say he had any major ones.Randy Shields said he telegraphed his punches a little.

Think that's about it tbh, nothing major in weak spots really, it got him the top wins, his style so can't really fault it

Yeah he could get a little loopy at times.

Always the house fighter. Hardly a road warrior. Had a good set of hooks but not much for uppercuts, especially a left uppercut. Did not go to the body much. a borderline headhunter. Often did not set down on his punches but threw shoeshining punches on occasion. Brittle hands that could not have seen him in say 60 or 70 bouts.

Damn that's tough to call...for both Sugar Rays.

Yow...uhh, I think most of his flaws came out as he went up in weight. But I must admit to being currently flummoxed at the moment in regard to this topic...it says something I'm having a hard time coming up with an answer.

Welter Ray was a boxing miracle imo.

Going fundamentally, he used excessive movement.

People talk so much about his speed that his skill gets overlooked. They don’t talk about Ray Leonard’s skills the way they talk about Wilfred Bemetiz

Are there any other boxers you feel had no flaws?

Ray Robinson got caught by a lot of jabs, but I don`t know if Leonard had that flaw too, Robi commented way back that Leonard was special because after he jabbed he was so hard to hit with counter jabs.

Ray had a good left hook to the body and worked Mayweather Sr`s body pretty well after struggling a bit with Floyd`s shoulder roll. Ray used the uppercut a number of times in his rematch v Duran.

He tended to be a litle wide with a lot of his right hands.

I'm 60 and I always considered Leonard the best fighter of my lifetime, still do, so it would take a far worthier boxing analyst than me to point out any flaws, and even then it would be just nitpicking. Just enjoy his greatness, it is all over the internet to see, and don't worry about looking for "flaws" :ARMS1:
