Was John L. Sullivan known for any feats of strength or athleticism in his day? For example Tom Sharkey could bend metal coins with his bare hands! Corbett was known as a world class hand ball player. He also excelled at baseball. Jeffries has numerous references to brute strength, speed, and track and field events. Peter Jackson was a talented swimmer and diver. Fitzsimmons, so it is claimed had a 1,000 pound plus PSI punch measured on some machine in San Fransisco. OK--Sullivan had to be known for something related to strength or athleticism. Can anyone tell me what it was?
The real story is that, blind drunk, on a train journey, he staggered out onto the small platform at the back of one of the carriages, to relieve himself, fell off the speeding train into a farmer's field ,this happened near Springfield, Illinois. and a reference to it can be found in," Unforgivable Blackness".
If the story is based on a real event then it probably looked more like this: This content is protected This content is protected Or better still: This content is protected
Sullivan went up to 300lbs because of the booze ,he was probably heavier than the railway carriage he is supposed to have lifted
His refusal to fight black contendors was as much borne out of the contempt he had for them as it was a case of ducking. Not that either trait is particularly admirable.
