I thought this was just a highlight fight for a lead up for another big money heavyweight fight.
I thought tarver was a good world class fighter, but jones was being compared to srr.
In his walk to the ring you could see he look drained, didn't look right but still thought he'd put on a clinic.

I felt Roy was going to own Tarver like he did most of his opponents, at that time anyways.

You said you watched Tarver win Jones belts and then said you didn't think much about the weight cut. I bracketed them together?

I figured he was still Superman Roy Jones and would just be untouchable once again. I was rooting heavy for Tarver though as I was wanting someone to knock Roy off. Jones showed grit though as he battled back hard late in the fight and showed he was more than just flash and finesse. Jones was so dominant he rarely had to rally late, he showed stones here..

I was absolutely ecstatic when Tarver starched him in fight number two, at that point I was still wanting to see him beaten and man was he knocked cold, I loved it!!!

I was 16 years old at the time, so I wasn't really knowledgeable about amateur boxers.

Can you explain the rationale behind that? I know he has the bronze medal at the Olympics as well as a amateur world championship, which, really should count for about the same as an Olympic medal. Toss in his Pan Ams medal and some US nationals hardware.

What, in your opinion, sets him above someone like Rocky Juarez who had virtually identical credentials, or earlier guys like Mark Breland or Pernell Whitaker?

He took silver, not bronze. You named three other guys who also would be in the discussion.

    Edit: It was a bronze

I watched him win Jones belts vs montell Griffin

I didn't think about the weight going in because I hadn't realised Jones having a decline

I was just more so hoping tarver having good momentum could somehow pull it off

    I rewatched the fight.

I think the most valid scores would've been 6-6 or 7-5 Jones. Roy gutted it out by strongly winning the last 2 minutes of the 12th after taking big punches in the first minute.

Round four was a big swing round because Jones controlled abiut 2:30 in the center of the ring without actually doing much and then Tarver got in about five punches on the ropes to close the round (which oddly enough didn't seem to even register as thrown punches on Compubox). Lampley and Harold seemed to be misinterpreting that Tarver was actually the harder puncher and more durable fighter and that Jones was genuinely being challenged; they figured it out by about the 10th.

Compubox is always for the house fighter. It's a skewed results type system and especially with HBO. The only worse thing is probably Bob Sheridan calling DKP fights.
