I still have the KO mag previewing the fight. Toney had recently been upgraded to no.1 p4p ahead of Whitaker, whereas Jones was in the lower reaches of the top 12. Ring still had Pea at the top IIRC. KO picked Toney to win by split decision. It was one of those fights though where the pick seemed at odds with the analysis. It was highlighted how much Toney had struggled with movers, and that Jones would be the quickest fighter he would have faced, as well as having a big advantage in power. I got the impression that they felt compelled to go with Toney as they had made a big hoo-ha about Toney being the best fighter in the world, despite a lot of the evidence pointing towards a Jones win. I didn't know enough about Jones at the time to pick him with confidence. I had seen the Hopkins fight and thought Toney may be able to get to him, but equally I thought Toney was a bit overrated. It was probably an even-money fight going in, and the ease of Jones' win certainly caught a lot of people by surprise.
Who said it was Jones his fault? Fact is Roy did not beat an in shape Toney whether you like it or not.So his win will always have a little asterix.I mean you could see that James body structure looked visibly different from the Barkley or Littles fights or even the Prince Williams fight. It is quite an overstatement to say Toney dropped a ton of rounds against Nunn as it is to dismiss Mc Callum as an old fighter. Then you go on to say that to say that it was clear that Jones would do what Tiberid did.Do you even realize that Tiberi fought a totally different fight than Roy. Both have zero similarities
Going back a bit now ,but I got the impression that Toney was the man to beat .He was the big name in the middle division s at the time ,more so Even than Jones I'm pretty sure ? And the dominant way he beat Toney was a little unexpected ?
I don't know if I commented on this yet, I think I thought Toney would do better than he did. I don't know if I thought he would win. I wish I remembered.
Nobody said it was Jones' fault. It is and was 100% Toney fault. But that was always a weakness in his game and a consideration to make pre fight. Sure is not a weakness with Jones. If a guy does not bother to get in top shape and stay in top shape it is a subtraction, not a crutch. No different than having another weakness like dropping his left hand when throwing a right. A weakness. And a big advantage for this particular opponent going into the bout. Toney's win over Barkley should be dismissed as well then because Iran had to drop so much weight. You want to be fair, right? Who was the old guy in the McCallum---Toney fight? I must be remembering wrong---I thought the youth was on the side of Toney---You claiming Toney was the much older fighter? If you were one the people putting your $$$ on Toney in the fight, then thanks. Much appreciated.
