What were your thoughts on Wilder back when he was saying he wanted to literally kill an opponent

He came off as more cringe and pathetic than intimating and scary.

    I miss that Wilder.

30 years people still will be watching Wilder’s highlight reel knockouts. Out of Wilder, Fury, Joshua, Usyk, Deontay Wilder will be remembered the most.

I thought it was a trashy thing to say. In hindsight though it appears it was more to sell fights and build a fearsome reputation, which I can respect. The sport needs villains too.

I thought he was a moron...same as now.

The thing that made it really sick is that his camp started targeting medically unfit opponents. They only agree to Fury because they thought that there was no way he could come back from morbid obesity and substance abuse.

Remember Wilder beating the poo out of Zelenoff and then standing over him telling him what a nice guy he is, on that day Zelenoff proved that he has a better chin than Malik Scott.

    Wilder beating Charlie feels surreal.

Wilder said many years ago that he wanted a dead body on his record, and a few years later Pope Francis named him an ambassador for peace, LMFAO...

I chalk it up largely to fight hype. I remember when Mike Tyson said something WTF?! like he wanted to eat Lennox Lewis's children or some such thing when hyping that fight. When Holmes would hype fights in his earlier years as belt-holder he simply came across as disagreeable and unpleasant; it was only later he developed a sense of humor about it; ditto of course for Foreman. Very few fighters had Ali's singular gift of gab.

Wilder, big George, Tyson, Liston were all similar “characters” in the boxing world.

As big power punchers normally are, they are the “killers”, of the divisions and need to think/behave like that to sell and to be the said “Killer”.

I do think people make too much drama over this. Maybe it’s the modern world has gone soft, but for example Tyson was wayyyy more crude (r4pi5t, several biting incidents, threatening to eat kids, threatening to r4pe men) etc.
    people loved it.

But Sugar Ray Robinson tells stories about getting blessed to fight by his preacher because he was having dreams of killing his opponent, and we run out and prop him up on a pedestal for it like he is some benign prophet....

So nah, nothing about Wilder saying that bothered me

It’s just usual double standards by people to create an uproar and drama about something
