If Burns had won the last 3 rounds I would have given him the fight, I think he would have won them as Gonzalez was dead, I thought he had deliberately taken a breather in the 8th as I was at the fight and couldn't see his facial expressions. When it came to the 9th and he kept running away then I knew that he was dead on his feet. Ricky has proved his fitness before- Gonzalez hasn't.

I think it is pretty poor that he gave up so easily as well, if I'd a broken wrist I would have fought one handed if it was for a world title, especially if I'd had so much success previously. I broke a thumb in sparring and still fought with it about 4 or 5 days later and that was for no reward other than the buzz of fighting so can't believe someone would quit in the biggest night of their life.

I'm pretty sure it was the body shots in the 8th and 9th, you could see him grimace and slow down and the hands even came down a lot more. The wrist may have been injured but I reckon the body shots took everything from him after he blew his beans in the 7th

I had Burns down by 3 also which seems to be the consensus for those of us not with an agenda. Anyone who genuinely believes that Gonzalez quit because of a wrist injury is clearly blinkered, he had nothing left and he psychologically crumbled and didn't want anymore therefore the better man won because world title fights are 12 rounds not 7. All Gonzalez had to do was run and jab and the judges would have found a reason to give him one of those last three rounds but he couldn't because he was done. Gonzalez was better then anyone predicted but Burns was anxious, looked rusty and made stupid mistakes which he will learn from.

Judging Burns on one fight is ridiculous, Burns was way off his best last night but at the end of the day he won and that's what true champions do find a way to win when they are not at there best.

I am a massive Ricky fan, but he was damn lucky in this one, Gonzales stopped punching cause he couldn't. I gave Gonzales every one of the first 7! If he didn't damage his wrist he would have win on my card even if Ricky took remaining rounds. To be honest Ricky looked out if sorts in the first 7, Gonzales was out boxing him relatively easily. But a win is a win, even through injury, simple.

His heart has to be questioned too but I agree that he was gassed and Ricky was starting to turn the heat up.

Shame, as it would of been a good watch.

Maybe, maybe not - given the scorecards it's more than likely that Burns would have ever gained a draw (and ipso facto retention of the title) or, if he scored a KD (not beyond the realm of possibility given how tired JG was) he would have won outright.

The fight's over 12 rounds, not 7, so regardless of how impressive JG was in the earlier rounds, they amount to nothing if he can't maintain his dominance in the later, and especially the championship, rounds.

  8. I don't buy the injury, he was gassed badly in the last two rounds and the corner were working hard on his legs. I think he simply quit because of exhaustion which came down to poor conditioning not the pressure Burns was applying.

If Gonzalez had the engine he would've cruised to a points victory.

This is what I don't understand. Boxing is about more than just skills or speed. It's a 12-round fight and if you can't maintain your work and the other guy can, the guy that can is the superior fighter.

    Poor condition?

The bloke was in tremendous shape. But as they say in football, there is a difference between fit and match fit.

It appears he wasnt match fit....and never expected the fight to go as far as it did. He has never fought outside of Puerto Rico, and I don't think he has ever been that far in a fight before. Whilst the footage on youtube looked good, and the padwork tremendous, even the padwork looked laid back and that was full on training.

Ricky is super fit and ready and Ricky would of gone 15 if needed, thats the gulf.

The gulf wasn't in class and skill. It was in fitness and determination.

i think Rickys performance was a combination of being a bit outclassed but also trying too hard to prove himself due to pressure of expectation, all that lunging isnt Burns, but think about it,Gonzalez style, if Ricky had stood back and boxed he could have made it just as hard for Gonzalez to catch him it would have been a technical bore fest in many critics eyes and Ricky would have got stick for it.

I dont think its about having the engine it was more about ring experience which Gonzalez clearly lacked otherwise he`d have stuck to pot shotting burns to the end. But it appears he was so used to finishing opponents off he thought this would be the same as the rest , but he was in with a champ who took his best shots and fought back under adversity
