The rematch will be a terrible idea. He loses the rematch... his career is over. If he steps back and beats Whyte, Joyce and someone like Hrgovic... I have doubts if he beats Joyce but if he does get 2 very good wins, he'll be back in contention and could then start chasing the big fights again. The rematch is way too risky, especially given that the first fight was a boxing lesson. 9 times out of 10 the smarter and more technical boxer adjusts better and wins the rematch. AJ need to take a step back. Him vs Whyte would do big numbers, same with him vs Joyce.
I was trying to be realistic. Heck yeah, boxing fans like you and me want to see everyone fight each other! I want to see AJ vs Wilder, AJ vs Fury, etc...but promoters are not likely to put those types of fights on. I wish fighters and promoters would put on good fights rather than try to protect the and pad the records.
Agreed. AJ has the potential to give every HW a tough night. Never in a boring fight. He should get a shot at all the other top guys win lose or draw. Styles make fights. AJ has a style that matches up well against most heavies.
In April 1933, Ali was 31 and had two unavenged losses. AJ is 31 with two losses, and he has avenged one of them already. If he wants to stay in the game, he should get a new trainer and work on a different strategy. He made the same mistake Canelo made with Floyd. He thought he could box with Usyk. He can't. Nor can any other current heavyweight. He needs to use what he's got...size and strength. He needs to take the fight to Usyk right from the opening bell...go for broke. He seems to have become somewhat timid after his scare from Wlad and his loss to Ruiz. Maybe he is damaged good in terms of never wanting to engage all-out in a toe-to-toe exchange. But he definitely has the possibility of beating the smaller man. When AJ lost to Andy, I stated that same night he would be the favourite in the rematch. I will have to wait till closer to the Usyk rematch to make a call, because Usyk is a whole different challenge to what Ruiz was. It will be a b ig challenge for AJ to come back from Saturday night, but it's not undoable.
As Hearn said AJ has nowhere to go, he has to take the rematch. He'll lose again and then make a rematch with Whyte, it will still sell well and AJ will probably win. Keep him away from the top 5 at all costs though.
What can he do but rematch Usyk? Anything else is an abject concession of his claim on the kingship. Joshua's brand hasn't been built on an admission that he's second, third or fourth best. I can't see a reversal happening, but, if he is able to (legitimately) avenge that defeat, he will deserve a large kudos.
