What will/should Manny and Freddie's strategy be for Mayweather?

What will Roach and Manny’s game-plan (and possible plan B) be for Mayweather? What would you do in order to have Pacman fight the right fight? Keep in mind the southpaw-orthodox dynamics and how Pac’s offensive left and Mayweather’s defense and offensive right will play out in this context.

    Roach before the Mosley-Mayweather fight:

“Mayweather makes some basic mistakes- like when he sticks his chin out and puts his hands down- but none of it matters because of his speed. He uses the shoulder roll a lot obviously. While he seems to use it more defensively than offensively, he really uses it as a trap: He’ll lure an opponent into thinking it’s only a defensive move, and that’s when he’ll roll and throw his right. It’s what he did to Oscar (De La Hoya) , and caught him a couple of times with that shot in the second half of the fight.”

Pacquiao and Roach in the Clottey post-fight interview:

Roach: “Well, Manny’s a little disappointed in Floyd and his accusations, he makes fun of him a little bit when we’re in the gym, and he shows me how he’d crush that defense. And we will crush him.”
Pacquiao: “I think his style is not difficult style like Clottey, it’s easy to study…”

    Thoughts?

I don't think he'll be able to crush or penetrate that defence. He may have a few good moments in the early rounds, but once Mayweather figures hi style out, he'll be hard to get to. Manny's a rythm fighter, and will be ever so confused when Mayweather delves in to his tool box, and adjusts the dimension of the fight.

One thing that may help Manny getting the better of Floyd, is fighting his heart out and stealing at least 7 of the rounds by effective aggression and work rate. No chance in hell is he matching him in skill. But Roach no doubt will have other things in place which we of course have not got the expertise to think of ourselves.

When thinking about this matter, I honestly don't ask 'what can they do to beat Mayweather'. Instead I think 'What can be done to steal this fight from him'. That's the only way I can see it happening, a slight bit of luck swaying in Manny's favour for a decision on the score cards.

Get into Floyd's head, make him go off his fight plan.
Pac has the tools needed (speed/power ext...)

    Easier said than done.

he is going to do something simular to the formula that he gave oscar when he trained him for floyd... at least much like it...most will be applied to what he thinks it takes to take him down..besides applying it to a different fighter that manny is than oscar.

It's going to be Floyd vs. manny and roach.... the whole time...round for round.

roach will want manny to be quick on his feet and keep moving...never stay too long in front of floyd... roach will want him to pressure him to the ropes and try to get that body.
besides the general beating of his arms and shoulders to wear down his defence.

roach knows that the headhunters lose against floyd.

I had a discussion earlier about it..and i said that freddy will tell him not to go buck and gas himself out with a frenzy to try and hit him... but then my pal said ...manny don't really lose any stamina...which he is pretty correct with.

i'm pretty sure of which possible tapes roach will watch to see what he can exploit as do many anti mayweather fans do. ( a crazy exgirlfriend is callin me now...again and again and now my train of thought is gone.)

I dont think outboxing his opponent is ever on MP's mind, anyway.

Even if that is the official gameplan of his team, deep inside, everytime he fights, he feels that he will probably be outboxed by his opponent per round.

So he's not thinking of the fight as 12 individual rounds to be won, but his mentality will be

"I must be able to beat you up and defeat you before the time is up."

There is always a sense of desperation in his style. He needs to beat up his opponent to win, make him surrender, or knock him out cleanly.

He might lose the rounds, but as long as his main goal is being being accomplished (breaking you down and hurting you until you get stopped) that is the bigger picture, losing close rounds isnt so bad.

Pacquiao is a southpaw with great speed, who throws a lot of punches, who has excellent movement, who uses angles, and who has great punching power. Floyd cannot outwork him, and Floyd does not have the power to stop him.

Manny Pacquiao is the man to crack the Mayweather code.

Just swamp him with activity and put him in a defensive shell like Castillo did, and use footwork to aviod clinches.

lots of pressure, working the body foremost then switching to the head at the end of flurries.

Move a lot and shoot from different angles as always to keep mayweather from building in confidence.

His stamina will be a valuable tool as many have won early rounds but faded later in the fight and floyd has dominated once he gains the momentum.

I think roach will be looking for little habits floyd has to take advantage off. he tends to dip his head a lttle and leave his arms low before he throws a straight right. This isnt something new but no one has had the speed yet to fully capitalise on this.

I also think they will want him to stay very disiplined after what happened with Mosley. after the second round Mosley was looking for the big sahots and floyd picked him off, dominated him and left mosley doubting himself. They will n ot want Manny to m ake the same mistakes.

Use his speed, go for the kill with the left, go to the body, get him on the ropes and pound the shite out of him. Keep him in the center of the ring. Don't box him. Do what he(Pac) always does, and he will be fine.

man.... i have NO DOUBT in Freddie's ability to analyze and breakdown an opponent's defense. Its up to his fighter's abilities and versatility to apply that to full effectiveness. Manny Pacquiao is that fighter. This is a great winning team that has been steamrolling everyone...

Im sure they'll train for Manny to take a stiff straight shot amidst a combo, and counter the right straight. This will discourage mayweather in attempting to counter during or end of a combo, because he REALLY doesnt like to get hit.

They may try to work on a possible counter vs mayweather's lead left hook he loves to jump in quickly with. But usually he'll do it because he detects the fighter to be off-balanced or he's at a great angle and the opponent wont be able to counter in time, before he hugs...

Crank up his in/out footwork as fast as his little feet can go. And make sure he's going in/out in varying angles continuously. Mayweather wont be able to anticipate and counter as well, or defend himself as well when getting attacked at angles. At least this isnt something new for Pacquiao, and the core of his offense. His punching angles are ridiculously under-rated but is the reason why fighters are not able to defend or get away from his punches in the first place. They get so tired of getting hit, their fighting spirit shuts down and they just clam up in the ring...

usually, Roach has 1 or 2 very slick technical things he has Pacquiao doing to really cut's into the opponents weakness. Like, using a lead right hook vs David Diaz, counter right hook vs Ricky Hatton, or what i call Mike Tyson's Can Opener(he used his right), Left hook + left uppercut vs Clottey. When Mayweather rolls his shoulder for defense and to hide a counter right, try slipping to his left and broadside him with a right body hook. With his shoulder high and on his left side, his right wont be able to reach Pacquiao.

He better get very lucky and catch Mayweather early while mayweather is still feeling out Pac and before he gets settled.

After round 3 to 4 Manny has little chance of outboxing mayweather out of 12 and the old plan of just out working him isnt going to work. floyd isnt as inactive as you think and he was putting together a lot of 2 punch combinations its not all pot shots.

    That's true.

However he didn't seem to have that approach when he was in the ring with Oscar. That fight revealed he has got the ability to carry out a calculated game plan, as oppose to his 'destruction mode' you've alluded to.

I agree 100% with Uncle Rio when he said "Manny and
Roach should not make a strategy how to beat Mayweather but how to steal this fight from him." And to add to that the only way to steal the fight to floyd is to knock him out.
