What would a clean, well-managed Tony Tubbs acheived?

True. But that goes for the guys Tubbs beat as well.

 

You're mis-using the word "talent".
Pinklon Thomas had something like three amateur fights and rose to the same level as Tubbs at the same rate as a professional.
Tubbs had about 250 amateur fights according to some reports, he represented the USA in international tournaments, was a top amateur.
I doubt Tubbs would have had the same success in the pros without all that experience in the amateurs.

 

Slick as Wimpy Halstead.

The 28-year-old Tubbs began his comeback last month with a lackluster win over Mike Jamison.

Saturday's effort wasn't much better. There was a lot of bobbing and weaving, but a fight never seemed to break out. Halstead, who fought at 219 pounds, caught his opponent with a good left in the first round and a couple of rights later on, but that was the extent of his attack.

To measure a mans worth please measure him against the guys he did fight.

Tubbs had close fights with Greg page and Tim witherspoon and out pointed bones smith ... This is the sum total of his career!! Mark Williams also lost by SD to Tim Witherspoon, even marvis Frazier beat Bones Smith and Marvis himself beat Tubbs. its not any kind of resume.

Tony may have had the lazy skill to extend a top fighter without ever looking to expend or engage himself too much. Had a knack of keeping things friendly...so what! there was no TNT about him. If you can neutralise a good fighter without over committing yourself it doesn’t make you great if that’s all you can do even at your very best.

Truth is out of who he got to fight Tubbs overachieved anyway!! Greg Page had to climb over a whole lot more better fighters to become a belt holder than Tubbs ever did, as did Gerrie Coetzee and the rest of them.

The fact that Tubbs as a veteran was always able to appear as a capable journey man does not mean that he was ever really anything more than just that. Being around at the time when shading the second best heavyweight gave you a belt IS the only factor that allows Tubbs to look historically more significant than many other merely decent heavyweights.

It is not going too far if we say Don Cockell or Tommy Hurricane Jackson beat more contenders than Tony Tubbs.

 

Tubbs > Bowe > Holyfield > Tyson :deal
