Now I'm not saying he is guilty, and I'm fact I'm going to apologise for any statements I've made jumping the gun, I'll weight and here the official verdict, but let's say if Margarito & his corner were found to have illegal substances contains in his handwraps, would you consider it more damaging for the sport if: A: The commission announces that he is guilty, he is fined and suspended and shamed or - B: The commission instead sweep it under the table and doubt still linguers. Of course with option B, there is the chance that if they clear him and are found to be lying, then it creates and even bigger scandal and even more damage to the sport. Even if that scenario doesn't emerge, if it all gets put on low-profile and partially dismissed, people may never regain true faith in the sport, and it's ability to distinquish cheating. Also, This content is protected do you think we will ever truly get the full story behind it and the full truth? With the commission already signing off the other glove, there is big pressure on them. If he is found guilty, people are going to start questioning why they didn't spot it and do there job properly in the first place, and people will start to ask how many times has this happened before without them noticing and taking any action. Also, This content is protected do you think we will ever find out, if he is guilty, whether it will of been used in other fights? -- All opinions welcome from both sides, those who have already have him seated on Death Row, and those who are waiting for more conclusive evidence to come to the fore first, though I would appreciate if we could have a reasoned debate and keep away from abusing each other the whole time. Thanks in advace for any replies.
The truth is the right thing here and anywhere. It would be more damaging if they lie and coverup now and like 2 years later someone involved spills the beans and reveals what happened. And we probably wont know the ultimate truth about what happened with him(i.e if hes guilty , how many fights did he use it for)..but the same goes for many other fighter out there who may have cheated
Question 1: the truth is always better. Of course many jackasses will use it to ridicule the sport (the UFC guys for example) but it would still be a step in the right direction. If he was to be suspended it would mean there are limits to corruption in boxing and some rules still apply. Q2: I don't think we'll get the whole truth simply because I don't believe in the honesty of the commission. Q3: Very unlikely. However there is one possibility. If I remember correctly during the controversy around Trinidad's handwraps someone from his corner said they thought the hands were wrapped properly because they were always doing it like that. So they basically admitted they were doing this before. Perhaps some genius might say something similar here? (I might be wrong about the Tito case, my memory is kinda hazy in that department).
I didn't really explain option B aswell as I could have. I mean obviously them lying and covering it up is an option, but I sort of was referring more to a Shane Mosley-BALCO type case. I mean they still haven't got to the bottom of that really, and it's been years. What if they drag this out over a long period, and we can't definatively say whether he's guilty or not, is that more damaging than them coming straight out and saying he's guilty if he is?
Question 1: The truth will be best. This sort of thing could lead to the death of fighters, so it has to be stopped, regardless of how damaging it could be in terms of the media for this to get out. Question 2: Highly unlikely. It would be in their interest for this investigation to come up negative. Question 3: I doubt we'll ever be told if he's used it in other fights, but it is safe to say that Margarito has been using it for quite a while now.
I think it would be better to suspend him from the sport. Then it separates boxing from the corruption. Do I think we will get the full story? Probably not, and that leads to question 3. The only way we get that answer if he used it in other fights is if someone from Margarito's corner who is legit. comes clean. I doubt that would happen since it would incriminate everyone in the corner. But the assumption would be if he used it in this fight he probably would have used it in other fights.
