What would have happened had Pavlik and Abraham fought?

I was always just about on the Pavlik side of the fence.

I've absolutely no idea.

Around the time the fight was mooted I'd have favoured Abraham pretty strongly, in light of Pavlik's bad loss to Hopkins..... and that thought was strengthened when Pavlik was tooled by Martinez.

But after Abraham was so easily disarmed by Froch I'm not sure.... plus both of Pavlik's conquerors have gone unbeaten since...... it was the way Froch just beat him up and hardly took a clean punch throughout the fight.

Then again Pavlik is a bit predictable, more so than Froch, who's wider punches are more suited to getting round that permaguard that AA employs.

AA on points in a war.

 

I'd probably lean towards Pavlik. Reach advantage and straight punches would make it hard for Abraham to get inside. Kelly would have put the early rounds in the bag, and when Abraham did open up and fight, I don't think he would be able to spark him.

 

Pavlik liked to stand straight on and trade in bursts though, and can be buzzed. Abraham would have much more oppurtunities against Pavlik than he did against Frochy, who pulled something out we couldn't envision him doing.

I cannot see Pavlik pulling off a gameplan similar to Frochy, and he's not as sturdy as our man either. I'm convinced Arthur stops him, and always have been.

 

Pavlik goes Down gets up but AA finishes him off.

 

The first obvious point here is if you pick Abraham you have to be willing to acknowledge he only wins by stoppage. That's a tough way to start out in a fight, especially seeing as Pavlik has never been knocked out and is actually very tough and resilient.

There were a lot of bad signs for AA in the loss to Froch, I mean aside from losing. The way he was seemingly unable and/or unwilling to gamble when confronted with range and power in equal measure. Something he had never encountered previously. He looked lost and just accepted the beating without trying anything more than edging forward. It's not too difficult to imagine Pavlik pumping away with double jabs on a lead footed target, followed with the odd right hand. It's not as if Froch was landing everything he threw, seemingly the force of the shots kept Abraham off balance and unwilling to gamble.

Now, Pavlik is not as awkward as Froch, he won't lean back and away from punches. It won't be as dominating, Abraham will have more opportunities. But I just don't see any reason to pick him to spark Pavlik, it took him 12 to get to Taylor and he didn't stop Miranda the first time. Furthermore, Pavlik walked through Miranda very easily and had no respect for his power.

 

Mad fight which Pavlik wins by KO in or around the 8th...

 

I'm not sold on Pavlik being unstoppable though.Unlike Froch, he will take more big shots as the rounds come on. Pavlik is essentially a come-forward fight, who liked to step in with uppercuts and not move away or lean back like Dirrell and Froch did.

Not stopping Miranda when you're as injured as Abraham was is no shock IMO. The way he stopped Gevor was very impressive IMO, and when Abraham was healthy he stopped Miranda fairly easily.

One big thing is the fact that Pavlik, in being so basic, will hit a lot of glove, Dirrell was fast and Frochy was awkward, Pavlik is basic but effective.

I never thought Frochy could pull off what he did, I thought he'd be to easy to hit, because I'd only seen him in top class use his face to block. Until I see Pavlik against a top-line opponent boxing in a disciplined manner I can't envision him winning.

Shame it didn't happen though.
