Monzon would have eventually lost, either to Hagler in 1980 or much worse, to someone lesser based on just getting too old. Monzon would have been 38 in 1980.

Thankfully, he retired on top and threw down the gauntlet to other middleweights to say ‘beat that!’. And not even a middle as great as Hagler could. But he came damn close.

Why do people talk about the first Hagler vs Hamsho fight as if Hagler lost ?

That was one of his very best performances in my opinion.

By 1979, someone would have beaten him. Probably Marvin, maybe another of the Philly crowd in an upset.

Hagler did lose to a Sugar Ray Leonard who had come out of retirement, the boxing officials are the opinion that matters, not his fans.

Agreed, rather strange title really, if he kept on fighting , he would have got beat, if you eat too much you get fat, if you go out in the rain, you get wet, if you.... stay safe guys.

Really good post Mike, Carlos was smart, he knew when to retire. A great fighter knows his own limitations, he was already financially set, he was also a movie actor in his native land of Argentina. Only a Dumb Cluck would come back, misspending his money, putting himself in that situation.

That’s not my question...my question was “ why is the first Hamsho fight always used as evidence that somehow Hagler is not in Monzon’s class ....Meanwhile Monzon has a draw on his record with Bennie Briscoe

Which was later avenged as champion on Nov 11 1972, by unanimous decision. Sorry to offend others but how come Hagler could not kayo a come backing fighter like Leonard? I would like to hear all the excuses.
