What would Sergio Martinez have to achieve realistically to become an Top-100/ATG?

Sergio Martinez is an elite fighter and deserves his place as number 2 pound-for-pound. He has beaten the best competition around his weight-class consistently for the last two years.

His accomplishments in the long-term, however, do not make up a resume that places him anywhere near the top-100 best fighters all time. Getting into the Hall of Fame with the limited time he has left would be a big challenge in itself. I, however, find myself rating him very highly when pitting him against historically good contenders of the same size, and even see him troubling some great fighters of the past. While many people are impressed with his seemingly expert head-to-head abilities, the resume just isn't there to back such thoughts up in any legitimate way.

So my question to you is, what could Sergio Martinez feasibly do within the remaining years of his career in order to be recognized as one of the best 100 fighters who ever lived? Who would he have to beat? Do you think he would be capable of doing so, assuming all such requirements fall into place? Or is it out of his reach given either the limited competition available or his own abilities as a fighter?

    Discuss.

His remaining unbeaten until retirement will be key. With the thin resume he has and the few years he has left to bolster it, accumulating more defeats would hinder his resume severely. We are talking about top 100 all time. Relative to that, Martinez has a thin resume.

Best wins: Williams II, Pavlik, Dzinziruk, Roman, Bunema, Cintron ripoff draw but still a draw... That is a very weak resume to make top 100 cut. For me, a realistic course of action that would make me think would involve him dropping to 154 and picking up a belt, potentially lineal: Barker, Chavez Jr, Sturm, (drop to 154) Williams III, Lara, Alvarez, retire... Even then, I don't know.

I think the Middleweight divisions 154-168 have been extremely weak the last decade. It will be really hard for Martinez to become recognized as an all time great in this era. A champion needs rivals, and there aren't any it seems.

@nonito: the dzinziruk fight was beautiful to watch. Outclassed a pure boxer at his own game.

Right, his resume right now couldn't even get him into the HOF, I think. The options you present seem interesting...what about moving up though instead of down? Or down, then up? Ward, Froch, Bute...

Move up in weight to 168 and beat big name fighters over there or go down to 154 to fight either Pacquiao or Mayweather or both. He has to beat the best to be the best. That's what he needs to do to earn his ATG.

168lbs would be the key. Super Middleweight is a very strong division right now, arguably the strongest and deepest. He would need to move up and become #1 there before all the biggest and best move to Light Heavyweight.

Even then, that would not guarantee him a spot in the Top 100 ATG.

SMW has no talent really, except Ward. Its by far the most overrated and overhyped division in boxing. But with so many 'big' names at super middle, if Martinez beats the top ones, he will have my confident vote.

On a side note, I'd rather watch Tavoris Cloud or Chad Dawson fight anyday over the top 2 guys at super middle fighting each other.

Wrong at the move down part.

It helps your case of being a real great if you are NOT favored to win the fight. When you have every advantage going into the fight against smaller fighters it doesn't increase your ranking to the general public's eye

If he beats the winner of the super 6, presumably Ward then i don't think that it would be unrealistic to rank him top 100.

Sergio needs to dominate top opposition for another 3 years probably. He needs names on his resume. Maybe he should move back to 154? He could beat Alvarez, Sturm, Chavez, that would certainly account to something. Also, if he moved to 168 and beat some of the top guys there thats impressive.

Eominate the Mw for the next year or 2.. If he moves up to SM and beat the Super 6 winner id say that could even be enough...

I have guys like Calzaghe,Tszyu as borderline top 100 fighers... Abiliity wise Martinez is at least on par.. But resum wise needs 1 or 2 hughe wins... Or at least a couple years of dominant or impressive title defenses.
