If George Chuvalo was fighting in the times of Corbett,Fitz and Jeffries ,I wonder what the contempary writers opinion of his durability, strength ,and toughness would be? What do you think? Would we be regaled with tales of how he carried a Bull Moose through the frozen wastes of the Canadian Forests ? Would he have two very close fights with Tom Sharkey?
Stong, but he cant fight past 20 rounds. Corbett ran away for the first 20 rounds, and ko Foreman in the 29 round.
He would have been praised for his toughnes but as in his own era he would have lost to the best. He probably would have had a couple of epic fights with Tom Sharkey. He might split a series with Gus Ruhlin or Peter Maher. Corbett would probably outpoint him. Fitzsimmons would probably TKO him.
Personally, I don't think anyone from that era K.O's him or stops him. I don't think he's on top of the pile either, similar position to how he actually was in his era.
I could see guys like Fitzsimmons stopping him on his feet, but I don't see anybody legimately knocking him out or even putting him on the canvas. I mean look at the bombs he took off Foreman, and big George was putting absolutely everything into those punches, yes he was stopped but he was still on his feet.
Prior to Joe Louis, its doubtful anyman had the physical strength, combined with the timing of punch of often enough to KO Chuvalo. I doubt Louis would KO Chavalo also. Marciano would not. Chuvalo would cream anyone prior to Louis.
As hard a puncher as Fitz was ,Im not convinced that he could stop George, fights were allowed to go a lot longer in those days, otherwise Jeffries may have had at least 2 tko losses on his record. Could not Chuvalo take the punishment equally as well?
Yes he could but I am guessing that he would run out of steam before he could get on top of Fitzsimmons and that things would go down hill from there.
Chuvalo was not a big puncher, but he whaled effectively to the body, its possible he might even floor Fitz.
How so??? Who would have the genuine power to KO Chuvalo?? No, not Dempsey. Throw Chuvalo into a 'time machine' and land him directly in the path of all the flat footed, poorly timed, limited in technical brilliance, under skilled, over rated, cumbersome, poorly tuned unfortunates prior to Louis, Chuvalo would be a fine match for 99% of them.
Tunney would have won a lopsided decision over Chuvalo, but like everyone else, fail to put him down.
I dont buy it. Chuvalo would be a second rater in any era. I cant honestly pick him over any champion from Sullivan to Louis.
