Chuvalo v Corbett would be a great matchup, and i think i could definitely see a chuvalo upset on the cards. John L is too much for him. Jeffries also would dominate, although a Sharkey style match might not be out of the question.

I think that at the time Chuvalo would be seen as one of the best. I think he would be a slightly bigger version of Sharkey. Today, due to the lack of footage he would be considered by many to be primitive and no chance of lasting a round with Frazier and others. If he were around in Sharkeys time, it would be interesting to see a Fitzsimmons matchup. If Fitzsimmons knocked out Chuvalo, it would be simply used as more proof that the large older fighters were primitive and unskilled. Chuvalo vs Langford, Johnson etc would be another good era for Chuvalo. In fact, there is every chance that if around, Chuvalo might have been the great white hope everyone was looking for. He matches up reasonably well with Johnson and there is anohter fighter i would give him a chance against, Johnson might be it.

Chuvalo: I never drew the colour line.

Sullivan: You didnt have the luxury. You never had any title to hold hostage and had to take the fights that would further your career. You were probably grateful to break the colour line.

Sullivan had boasted at the California Athletic Club that he was willing to fight Godfrey of Jackson... if the financial return was worthy. 1890!!

1892. Well after the Corbett/Jackson bout had been faught. "I will not fight a negro. I never have and never shall" He then showed interst in Paddy Slavin and Charlie Mitchell.

Clearly the fat **** knew he was never able to curtail his girth again, endure a long battle and proceeded to tackle the little Brit instead. Pity, as Slavin would have torn him a new arse hole.

The fat slob was a **** poor excuse for a CHAMP.

I pretty much agree with this. Chavalo would be good enough to get a title shot if he was around from 1892-1905, but I can't see him winning one.

Chavalo was too slow, and lacked one punch power to bail him out in a boxing match vs a non-chinny fighters. I think guys like Jack O'Brien, Hank Griffin, Peter Jackson, and the like defat him.

Chavalo might have had some great matches with the likes of Goddard, Choynski, Slavin, Hart, Root, Martin, Armstrong and such.

One thing to note. Chavalo's best punch was to the body. Most fighters in the early portion of gloved boxing could take body shots, and in-fight a bit better than then do now. Chavalo's best weapon might not be as great as we think in this era.

Do you think Chavalo could out work Jack Johnson?

Most fighters could take better body shots that todays fighters?????
Are you talking about the same H/Ws???

    1870 - 1900???

The men must have been ferocious body punchers... pity there is no footage to show the 'immense body attacks'.

Lets be serious, Chuvalo would cripple these men. Pure and simple.

Stop being so bloody ignorant, and start accepting the progress of H/W advancement... in all aspects.

Sure, Frazier's punches had a lot to do with it, of course. But Chuvalo had had an previous injury there, or some such, that seems to have been an underlying casue. It was after all not often that Frazier fractured cheekbones or that Chuvalo suffered a fractured cheekbone.

So what? It's not that often that one breaks ribs either, but that doesn't mean Golota walked in the ring with Tyson with his ribs ordered like a Mikado game. Frazier is the second-best hitter Chuvalo fought so i don't find it all that hard to believe, given the amount of punishment the Canadian can take.... and in fact, took.

You don't believe the talk about Chuvalo having a previous injury in that area?

By the way, I don't mean to take anything from Frazier. Whether Chuvalo had a previous injury or not it was a great perfomance from Joe.

Jack O Brien beats Chuvalo? I cant see it,he was kod twice by Ketchel,I think he is one of the most overhyped fighters of all time,in many fixed fights according to his own admission, never defended his title, had zero power and ran all night.

He would have been beaten by Corbett, Fitzsimmons, and Jeffries...in my opinion...if he had fought all 3 of them. I think contemporary writers would probably think he was one tough fighter, with a cast iron chin, because I doubt if any of the three would have knocked him out...or even down.

The better question is if Chuvalo could out work James Jeffries? 5'8 172lb Sharkey almost did. jack johnson is way too talented for chuvalo
