What would Tyson Fury have to do for you to consider him an ATG?

    In no particular order:

    Not avoid the Klitschko rematch.
Not get dropped by an MMA fighter making his boxing debut and beating him like Joshua did.
    Beat Usyk twice.
Beat Joshua between 2015 and 2018.
Mop up the division with some consistency.
Consistently beat people in the top 5 once or twice a year rather than retire to go on a bender.
Fight Chisora once rather than every few months.

Here's the issue i have with Fury.

    1. After his win over Wladimir he never rematched him and wasted 3 years of his career being a glutton on a cocaine binge which should've been his prime years and he could've had so many legacy making fights.

    2. Wasting too much of his career on pointless rematches and stalling the division. As i said to you before facing Chisora is ok when you're upcoming contender so i have no issue with Fury fighting Chisora twice. But why did Fury have to face Chisora a 3rd time ? especially when he's supposed to be the number 1 Heavyweight in the world and a champion ? and Chisora was 1-3 in his last 4 fights. Even the Wilder trilogy wasn't needed the 1st fight was a controversial decision that pretty much everyone had Fury winning, when Fury dismantled Wilder in the rematch that should've been the end of that story.

    3. Too many poor performances against mediocre opposition ok you can make excuses for some of them like McDermott when he was still a work in progress. But when he's going life and death vs Wallin in which was his prime years, and he's almost losing to an MMA fighter when he's supposed to be the number 1 Heavyweight. So when 1 part of being an ATG is how good a fighter is in regards to the eye test /H2H ability, it's hard to rate him in that regard because of how erratic his form is.

All in all Fury had too much inactivity and wasted too much of his career on pointless fights and pointless trilogies.

For him to of become an ATG ? he needed more wins against ranked fighters, no 3 year hiatus between 2015-2018, win the fights vs Usyk.

Fury could've fought Povetkin, Ortiz, Joshua, Parker, Ruiz, Pulev, Joyce.

If he wins even half of the fights above along with winning even 1 of the Usyk fights fairly with no controversy he would've been an ATG IMO.

But all in all his resume is too paper thin and i think that ship has already sailed now.

    Beating the best guys
Ali beat all the top guys in the 60s, then post exile, fought and beat most of the top guys in the 70s

How many top guys has Fury beaten? Too many rematches with chisora and Wilder. He hasn't enough top opponents on his resume

He never rematched wlad and he never fought Joshua. The best guy he fought beat him twice. He banked everything on Wilder which has aged poorly and usyk was his last throw of the dice

Like I said previous. Fury is 1-2 vs Great fighters and one guy was close to 40 and past his prime after reigning for a decade

Beat Usyk twice. Beat AJ twice. Beat Parker and Kabayel.

had he done that? Yep. ATG.

but it’s too late now. That said, I do rate him highly. He’s damn good. The past two fights, he’d have beaten anybody not named Oleksander.

so I rate him a bit higher H2H than I do overall. He’d give real problems to any heavyweight ever. Not an easy night for anyone. Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Lennox Lewis… they might well beat him, but it would not be easy. I guess I give Lewis the best chance? (Just to deal with the size).

for anyone who thinks he’s not really all that, ask yourself, what would happen if he were swapped in for Fisher or Allen last weekend? He could probably beat both men on the same night, give him an hour or so rest between fights. Probably knocks out Fisher, stops Allen on his feet.

ATG Heavyweights for me would be....

Muhammad Ali = 22 world title wins, 30+ wins vs ranked opposition.

Joe Louis = 25 world title wins, 30+ wins vs ranked opposition.

Lennox Lewis = 16 world title wins, 14 wins vs ranked opposition i'm including Holyfield draw

Larry Holmes = 20 world title wins, 15 wins vs ranked opposition.

Mike Tyson = 12 world title wins, 13 wins vs ranked opposition.

Evander Holyfield = 11 world title wins, 13 wins vs ranked opposition.

Wladimir Klitschko = 25 world title wins, 15 wins vs ranked opposition.

Rocky Marciano = 8 world title wins, 10 wins vs ranked opposition, retired undefeated.

Fighters like Frazier, Foreman, don't quite have the the numbers of the fighters above but they have other unique achievements that make them ATG's like for example.....

Frazier = Has the best single win in Heavyweight history beating an undefeated Muhammad Ali and still 8 wins vs 8 ranked fighters isn't too shabby.

Foreman = Destroyed ATG Frazier and another very good Heavyweight in Norton, become the oldest Heavyweight champion in history.

The only Heavyweight right now that is heading towards becoming an ATG at Heavyweight is Usyk who has 5 world title wins and 4 wins vs top 10 ranked fighters it will be 5 if he beats Dubois. But i still think he needs a few more wins to become an ATG Heavyweight IMO.

    Another fantastic post
You do your research and you back up your points well

I'm willing to call usyk ATG at heavyweight if he beats one or 2 more after Daniel. His numbers will be still lower than others, but being a cruiser and fully establishing himself as the number 1 at his age is a great feat

Ali is just something else wasn't he? The guy had 2 hall of fame careers pre and post exile. He talked the talk and walked the walk. Had wars in the ring.

    He is the heavyweight goat.

Even with the loseses to Usyk he can still hang with the best heavyweights ever, Usyk is just too good and Fury is a bit below him. He’s like Vitali, they are huge men at their best they are very difficult to beat.

He would have to be a lot better, and, defeat much better fighters to be considered an ATG in my book.

Nah, it ain’t that amazing achievement if you’re applying that to the world stage level. sure there’s been a number of brit heavyweight world title holders in the 4 belt era since the 90s but you overestimating the quality of a lot of those. In fact apart from canadian brit Lewis who is definitely a heavyweight atg, there ain’t any other names that really stand out or come close to be called great world heavyweight champs. You talking about guys like Bruno, Fury, Joshua, Haye, Hide an dubious. At brit heavyweight level they might be all time top 5 or 10 standard but they don’t come close if you talking about atg’s on the world stage an level.

Beat Chisora a 4th time, and he's top 5 in my books.

All of these are valid points. the point of the thread is...is there something he can do do get that back in your eyes? A couple of wins against Joshua? Another title reign? Or is it just not possible at this point?
