If you were the ref in this situation [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzOo_RLNoyU[/ame] I count 4 monster hooks landed on a opponent with his knee on the floor. And people think the RJJ disqualification was bad . If you were the ref would you DQ Cooney for this or let it be?
That was solely the ref's fault...he had the ****ing reactions of a snail. Like what happens in UFC, you punch until the ref steps in. It's obviously illegal to punch an opponent when they are down in boxing, but like I said it's the ref's job to step in...and he didn't.
No doubt, it's the referee's responsibility to protect a helpless fighter. Technically , Norton could have been considered down, but to Cooney, Ken was still upright and a target. Things happen fast in the ring, I don't think the ref was particularly slow in stopping it. It's easy to critisize from the armchair.
Norton was down in that he was held up by the corner post but thats not quite the same as being down down
Wow anyone could have made a snack break for that long. I think things happened quickly in that situation that the ref Tony Perez maybe caught by surprise, the fact it was just the first round, maybe he was making a pretty good check if Norton was really down.
If I was the ref, I'd asked to be slapped in the face. Norton is motionless and is only being held up by the corner-post, and he should have spotted this. Cooney's got a momentum going and he's going for the kill, and with the ref not stepping in, he's under the impression Norton is still up.
Ken Norton ducked a few times. Once he laid on the ropes, it appeared he was still ducking. The ref came in as soon as he noticed it was not a dip and halted the fight. Seems fair to me.
Ref: "Ah well, he is thé man who broke The Greatest's jaw, he'll be fine trolololoooo..." Meanwhile: Norton sitting on the ropes Ref: "What a dissapointment that, Norton guy..."
