Jack, I was aware of your comments and articles way before I even joined ESB. Though I never agree with anything you say, other than Tito was great, you always make me laugh. I was just thinking, wouldn't it be funny if you actually were Oscar De La Hoya having fun with everybody?

 

1996-1999

 

Probably the period between '97 to '00. I remember reading an interview with his ex-girlfriend, actually no, she was on Howard Stern and she said that the loss to Mosley changed him as a person. She broke up with him after that, said he became nasty and unbearable at times. I take it as he felt he won, or coulda won, the Tito fight but this is the first time he truely tasted defeat....meaning he felt he lost a decision before, but he never felt like he lost a "fight" until that night. She said it did something to him. And really, that was his peak in that fight. I never saw him look better then he was that night at any point after that fight.

Is that Shanna Moakler?

They showed her ringside in 1998 at the Charpentier fight and she killed Millie lookwise. Maybe she didn't put up with crossdressing.

Oscar's best year was 1995, but I'm not sure it that was when he was at his best. He was facing smaller fighters, while in 1999 he faced bigger and better guys in Quartey and Trinidad. People will naturally look better against lesser (although Hernandez, Ruelas, Leija, and Molina were hardly scrubs), or at least smaller, opposition.

Maybe 1997? He had his last fight @ 140 early that year, where he gave an absolute clinic on jabbing against MAGO. The Whitaker fight was very close, but I think DLH fought Pea better than anyone else prior to that besides Rivera. DLH dominated Rivera later that year and looked very good in that fight.

DLH looked terrific physically against Mosley, but he fought a rather dumb fight. He probably thought he coulld overpower Mosley, a relative newcomer to welterweight. I think if he fought a different style, like the way he did in the rematch, he might've won.

I've always felt more highly of Oscar's technical skill set than of Mosley's.

 

No question! DLH may not be a great person outside the ring but there is no questioning his accomplishments in the ring. I think his only gift was the Strum fight. But I think he got shafted on two fights, one with Tito and the 2nd encounter with Shane. Either way he's tested himself against the Best of the best and hasn't ducked anyone. That is a true boxing champion. Win or loose he takes on the best and he does very well every time.

 

Yes it was Shanna Moakler. She started dating De La Hoya early 97, and they split up a couple of months after he was defeated by Mosley.

Agreed regarding De La Hoya's skills compared to Mosley's.

96'-99. I'm getting tired of Oscar now but he sure has faced pretty much everyone except Winky. Got to give him big credit for taking the big fights.

 

He's just trying to ''erase'' all his (big) losses with one win against the/a top (p4p) fighter.
If he for example won against Floyd then people think and say ''oh he's better then ever''. And his losses then somehow are ''forgotten'':yep
