What your non boxing mates say about our fighters

Yes ive noticed this creeping in on my friends a bit too recently. Recent question i was asked.

"Why dont boxers ever employ the superman punch like MMA fighters its really effective in the UFC"

"Isn't the superman punch essentially a feint of a kick then a punch"

"Ye"

"So why would a boxer be worried about a feint from a kick?"

Instead of slagging of these so called "casual fans", maybe educating them but mainly encouraging them would be better. The more boxing fans/viewers the better!

I got into boxing by watching the British marquee fighters (Hatton/Calzaghe/Khan) but now follow it more in depth.

You wouldn't get someone into watching football by watching the championship, you'd rather try the Premiership (I got into football by watching the World Cup now follow it almost religiously).

Encourage you mates to watch Khan down the pub, or David Haye/Mayweather/Pacquiao, it's better then that they are watching boxing then none at all, and by chance they may enjoy some of the under card fights.

It's all about marketing really.

 

My best mate has not much info on boxing, when we are watching a big fight or something I just share my knowledge, try to build it up so he can enjoy it more. I'm slowly getting a good share of my friends into fans! The more you know the more you enjoy it I think, but only if you know the facts! I do hate that smart-arse who knows ****-all!

 

Just to put at ease those who are worried about boxing snobbery;

I would gladly have all my mates round to ours for a big fight, or go to one of their houses for the same. It's a good laugh and between fights (and rounds) I enjoy the banter. And generally, I dont mind ignoring them for an intermittent 36 minute period while I watch every minute of the action. And I will also happily "talk a fight up" just to get their interest. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

And even though we all reckon that we know loads about the sport, i'm happy to admit that I have been wrong a number of times (thought Taylor would do Pavlik in the rematch, thought AA would beat Froch - two of many!!!).

The thing that p!sses me off, is when people think they know what they're talking about and are obviously chatting ****. I've got loads of mates who dont have a clue about boxing. They will often ask some really fundamental questions (one of which - "If weight is such an advantage in a fight, how come he just doesnt come in at about 13 stone?" "Erm, because this is a welterweight fight so they cant come in at anything over 10 and a half"). I dont mind that. He doesnt profess to know anything and genuinely had a question that had obviously been on his mind for a while.

It's the "let me tell you...[insert ridiculous comment]" attitude that gets me. I think some people see the sport at its most basic (two fellas hitting each other) so assume the sport itself is so basic. They wont even entertain the notion that a smart technician is just as good if not better than the KO artist. All they see is the leather landing and assume that if you're nails you could walk into a ring tomorrow and dominate everyone. That's what I dislike and that's what I cant entertain.

Not the casual fan (or no fan at all) who doesnt make out like he's Burt Sugar and is genuinely asking about things he doesnt know.
