His fights were quite entertaining towards the end of his career. Thompson fight and that barnstormer with Ezra Sellers.

As a fighter he was a pretty limited talent by overall World Class standards, but fine for the 90s\early 00's cruiser scene.

Unlike most other Ingle fighters he was capable of being a genuine safety-first spoiler in the sense of knowing when not to take stupid risks with his chin up, knowing his limitations and was good at the old punch and grab tactics to minimise action.

Involved in some of the worst world title fights you will ever see against De Leon and Warring, but as Bonavena said had some good fights towards the end of his career.

He would have made Haye look awful, though i'm not sure he would take the risks needed to win.

Johnny Nelson has hardly aged in 10 years, he still looks close to his fighting weight. What a great guy, what a stallion.

Back in the early 1990s I made my only trip to the UK. I wanted to see a boxing card, of course, but was surprised to learn that in the 2 weeks I was there, only one fight card was scheduled -- in Hull (with Tony Booth in the main event -- at least I think it was the main event). It was some black-tie affair and me with no formal clothes, so I went to a shop and got some acceptable slacks and a shirt and tie, but couldn't afford to spend on a proper dinner jacket so I wore my black leather jacket instead.

Anyway, apart from enjoying the show I also met this young, tall fellow called Johnny Nelson, who was there with his trainer, whom I had never heard of, Brendan Ingle. Johnny was nice as he could be, talked boxing with me for quite some time -- got my picture taken with both of them, etc., etc. He was introduced in the ring and somehow so was I, as the announcer told them (not quite truly) that I had ventured all the way from America to see the show. Afterward I met up with a bunch of hooligan types who thought I was some kind of minor celebrity (I did not set them straight) and went pubbing in Hull.

    Great time.

I also ran into Hoko (Paul Hodkison, who had just captured the WBC featherweight belt) -- he was making a public appearance at a clothing shop in Liverpool when I was there doing the Beatles tour. He was a good guy and also posed with me and let me hold the belt for a photo.

I spent some time in Manchester (I was visiting a friend who was going to university there on an exchange program) and found the Collyhurst and Moston Lads Club or something like that, where Brian Hughes was wonderful to me and introduced me to Pat Barrett and the rest of his stable and let me work out a time or two.

Anyway, I'll always like Johnny Nelson because he provided me with a great memory and got on with me very well on my visit. Never saw him fight live, just bits on tape, and never heard him as a 'presenter,' which I take it to mean what we call 'commentator' on this side of the pond.

As a fighter he was absolutely dire to watch. Only Andre Ward can be considered more boring a fighter in the last 40 years.

As a pundit he's okay when just sat on the panel on fight night, but he really shouldn't be involved in the presenting side of it that's not for him.

Nelson is a very good with the entertaining unscripted off the cuff stuff, pretty good pundit but a dire presenter in front of an auto-cue particularly on ringside.

Always heard Nelson was a boring fighter so I jumped on YouTube and caught one of his fights, the guy looked in unbelievable condition walked out to a banging garage tune dropping some slick dance moves along the way,got in there outboxed a guy for six or seven rounds and then took him out with a beautifully timed punch bang on the chin. Now to me that's what boxing is all about, maybe I was just lucky and caught one of his better performances but on that showing I wouldn't dare to call him boring when there are **** artists like Tony Bellew floating around in British boxing.

As a pundit I think he's top notch, honest, good sense of humour and like the other guy said fills a shirt nicely lol

Well unless Naz grew a couple of feet painted himself black and changed his name to Johnny Nelson I'd say yeah,it was a very Naz like performance though bit more movement in the legs from Nelson and not as wild with his punches. All the Ingle fighters of the 90s seemed to rub off on each other in terms of style in the ring, they were good to watch.
