Well in my opinion he was exposed for guys well beyond their prime. Then when he fought Ward, and Adonis Stevenson he got beaten and never recovered.

He drained too much to get to 168, then ended up ruined from it. He subsequently got KTFO'd by Stevenson, and he was no more.

Shame, as he was really good before that.

Dawson was a mystery. He looked the part acted the part but something was missing. Kudos to out boxing Hopkins though.

I think he lacked the hunger to be the best.
Andre Ward would simply refuse to lose. That's the difference.

He wasn't as "bad" as he thought he was, but his chin certainly lived up to that nickname.

Dawson drained himself simple and plain. You could tell that weight cut was brutal as he couldn’t pull the trigger with slow reaction times. So the ward fight was the beginning of the end but that left hand from Superman finished him..

Dawson was a great fighter for his time.
as big a Hopkins fan as i am, one of my fondest memories is when Dawson famously called Hopkins a 'pu**y' after their first fight, and even went further in saying that Hopkins 'ain't no gangsta, a gangsta would have got up and fought me like a man'

sadly, Bad Chad got in tough with Ward, drained himself, and never recovered from the beating he took. it was one of the saddest things I've ever seen in boxing. then he came in unmotivated against Adonis Stevenson and paid the ultimate price.

great thread though, Bad Chad Dawson, one of the truly great Lite Heavies of his era. Forgotten too soon if you ask me, woulda loved to have seen him and Travoris Cloud mixing it up

I think this it it in a nutshell. He was good but stood up straight and was hittable which exposed his less than stellar chin. As George wrote before, he drained to fight Ward and thats all she wrote.

As mentioned by others, the bad decision to drain down to 168 ruined him.

He got RJJ syndrome. Cut weight to 168 for Ward, got KOd by Miranda in sparring before the fight, then KOd by Ward and finally by Stevenson. 3 concussions in a year after an excessiveweight cut and he was never the same

Yes sir indeed. Weight draining is never the way to go if you cannot comfortably make it. This is also why Canelo won't fight at 160 again either. He was never comfortable their either and if he does drain down God help him.

He never had the drive to stay at the top. It wasn't just Ward. He was much more talented than Pascal but got outhustled by a guy who wanted it more than he did.

I thought at one time he would be a top 3 PfP fighter. He started out as an aggressive fighter and had a great back and forth in Johnson I, but that bout changed him. He came out cautious in the rematch and fought that way from that point forward. The division was mostly old at the time, which produced a lot of boring fights. He was too technically sound for that version of Hopkins and others. But while he didn't quite achieve what I thought he might, he got a win over undefeated Adamek as a clear underdog, first clear win over Hopkins since 1993, Tarver x2, Johnson x2.

As champion, he would leave the U.S. He had the balls to fight Stevenson, Pascal and Diaconu in Montreal, drained himself for Ward, etc. He was never afraid.

Lest anyone forget, he got knocked slack jawed against Fonfara and stopped on his feet, in the last round of a fight he was winning.

Y'all must have forgot that "Bad" Chad fought twice last year and captured the prestigious USNBC Light Heavy Title
