Lakva Sim? :huh Alright, he became champ in a 2nd weight division (having already become the first Mongolian to ever become a world champion in boxing, period) and had probably set out all he could've ever wanted to accomplish in the sport already by his quick-turnaround loss flipping the lightweight belt to young prime Baby Bull Diaz, and was over the hill and probably figured "okay, back to Ulan-Bator, time for the pipe & slippers (or whatever the equivalent in Mongol culture)", I get that... But so then why come back a year later? The knockout of Simmons makes sense. Yeah, go out with a W, even if over a soft-touch opponent. Plenty of guys do that, no shame in the practice. ...but then he entered into a WBA 135lb title eliminator with the fairly well regarded fringe contender Ebo Elder, which could have set up a rematch with Diaz. AND HE WON. ...and then never fought again. How do you not cash in that golden ticket? He came back from a year retirement, found he still "had it", won a title eliminator - and then just said..."nah, I'm good."?? Why even participate in the eliminator if you're not going to go for it? One last payday at the very least, and you best case scenario might set the bar crazy high as the first 3x Mongolian world champ. Why not go for it? ...or did he try, and politics got in the way? Because that would suck. Sidebar: where do you (only if you've seen enough of these combatants to form an opinion, please) rank Sim all-time p4p/h2h in Mongolia? GOAT? Or behind Choi Tseveenpurev, who technically never held a world title but had a fine career anyway, with more longevity than Sim? Personally, I'd go with 1) Choi 2) Sim 3) Shinny Bayaar 4) Bayan Jargal 5) toss-up between Enkhbat Badar-Uugan & Nyambayaryn Tögstsogt, both decorated amateurs, since there are no other pros of even mild renown after Jargal. Both were Olympians, and Tögstsogt a Silver medalist. (Tögstsogt has also signed with Al Haymon and will be debuting in the pros soon, with Joe Goossen as his coach, so it stands to reason projecting that all told he will have done more than Badar-Uugan combined pro/am even if his amateur credentials alone weren't superior)
Or we could just splice ourselves a bit of frog DNA to split the difference and become dually reproductively viable hermaphrodites, like in Jurassic Park.
His license has been revoked for having such a weird name. It's true. They thought he's a bacteria rather than a fighter. Silly licensing committees.
His win over Takanori Hatakeyama was brilliant, very tough and destructive dude. Not really sure why he him them up when he did. I'd have him above Choi though. The win over Hatakeyama differentiates them IMO. Throw in a wins over Callist and Elder and a VERY close loss to Baek and you have a very good fighter. Choi gives him a good run for his money though. The new guy got ROBBED at the Asian games. Travesty.
When Sim fought (and defeated) Elder, I was working with Elder at that time. Sim reportedly received numerous death threats from a Georgia gang; DSGB-Down South Georgia Boys, a gang that Elder once was a member. The Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper reported that several gang members confronted Sim at his hotel and threatened either he forego the title eliminator or he would be killed. Sim's hotel room was vandalized later that night, yet no arrest were made. Whether or not this had anything to do with Sim's decision to never fight again, I have no idea, but I do know Elder came out to the media and said he had a massive amount of respect for Sim and wished him the best in the title eliminator, and that he had no information on who would threatened Sim's life, or why they would threaten Sim.
Baadar-uugan was out, I think for more than a year after his olympic gold and never found his form again. He could have had a much better career.
