As most of you here already know, I'll be starting boxing soon with a very well-known trainer, and one thing I was wondering is what a good reach is? I'm 5'11.5" and my reach is only 73". It was always a problem for me in football, but I'm not sure if it's small for boxing. Are most boxers with 73" reaches in fighters or out fighters? Just wanting to know what style fits my reach? :bbb
well its slightly longer than your height, so i think is normal, although alot of boxers have 3+ reach over there height. but it depend what weight you are ofc. for welterweight that seems a big reach, but less so for a middleweight.
Well, I'll most likely start off in heavyweight as I'm losing weight, but I'll most likely stop cutting at 175, light heavy.
And what makes you think that you'll be suited well to 175? Just focus on getting in shape and lowering your bodyfat before worrying about competing.
Because that's the weight I'm comfortable at. I used to be in very good shape, very fast, and very strong for my size, but injuries had their toll on me...but I want to return to my old state.
Unless you've boxed before (obviously you haven't) you couldn't possibly know what weight you're comfortable at. Maybe you feel your best in football at that weight, boxing will most likely be different. BTW, you're overthinking everything and asking questions on things you really don't need to think about this early in your training.
MURDR.. why are you wasting time asking about your reach? Your gonna judge what type of fighter your gonna be simply from your reach? Go in the gym, spar and everytime you spar try a different style. Simple as that, and dont try to predict your weight.. i predicted 58kg was my best weight and turns out 62-63 is my best weight
This is one of those: am I too tall, short, fat, thin, to be a boxer threads. What should I weigh, and is it ok to run in the evenings, is it ok if I spar with a heavier/lighter person. This and all other threads just scream,"I'm new to boxing and I don't know anything about it" I still enjoy reading them, however they get annoying at times. Having said that who would ask such a stupid question about their reach? A new kid who hasn't got a clue about boxing would. I'm feeling better now, I'm glad we did this.
:good Pretty much what I was going to say, you know you have somebody who doesn't know the first thing about the sport when you get this sort of question. Physical dimensions mean **** all, It's something that people who haven't fought think about almost to try and reassure themselves that they'll have an advantage in some area. The other week at a gathering I had to listen to this guy telling me about his broad shoulders and how he's scared to punch somebody with his right hand. Why? Because he's a plasterer and apparently he smashes his tool through walls he's that powerful, he showed me the muscle in his hand and everything  I asked him what his point was and why he thinks that means his punches are so deadly.. Confused looks... I explained to him the mechanics of a punch and I emphasized that you could get the guy with the strongest arms in the world and it means ****, your arms can produce very little power compared to your legs and torso. He said he asked me because he wanted a boxers opinion, he'd already asked his gym mates and bodybuilder mates and they agree with him apparently atsch The point of this story is that there are some dumb mother****ers out there who think they know something about combat, whenever somebody talks about physical attributes in regards to success in a skilled sport without actually ever playing one game or match of the skilled sport then it's a fair bet you're talking to a complete muppet.
You said it Lefty, some people actually think they know boxing and they try to impress, but they just let everyone know just how dumb they really are.
How old are you lefty, and how much boxing experience do you have? You seem one of the more knowledgeable posters on here.
There are so many factors playing in to a "good reach", its all highly individual. Style, timing and ability to use a specific reach is far more important than the reach. Don't worry about it mate, just keep grinding hard, an uncoordinated big man with a ridiculous reach will always find himself in trouble.
Hope you don't think I'm like that, because I'll be the first to admit I don't know jack **** about boxing. But brahs, will try and begin boxing on January 9th, if my knee feels alright :bbb
