at the expense of getting on with the rest of the career? On the Hopkins thread you even hear of people suggesting that Hopkins should avenge his defeat to RJJ - what the **** would such a thing prove? Avenging defeats is not something that is mandatory. It doesn't prevent somebody from being great if they don't do so.

I think avenging defeats is important, but only when such a win would be relevant.

Beating up on a shot fighter for the sake of it is pointless, even if they beat you years ago.

Only if the person you're avenging is of the same quality they were, and if you're both still comfortable with being in the same weight-class. Chasing somebody to different weights, for instance, is stupid.

    Of course.

But then the premise of the thread, and especially the thread title intimates that avenging defeats is useless.

Generally speaking, especially in today's boxing climate, it is. Unless you can get a rematch within the next 12-18 months, I don't see the point.

I think whilever both fighters are relevant, it is certainly a good thing to do.

12-18 months? It's not about time scale. As long as they are performing close to the standards they previously set it is perfectly logical. If Margarito comes through the contraversy, what would be wrong with a rematch in a years time?

    True dat.

If Margarito were to lose to Berto and Clottey by stoppage, what would be the point of Cotto rematching him? But if they were to fight once Cotto has (fingers crossed) dispatched of Jennings, then it's a relevant fight. Personally I think Cotto now has the balls to sit down on his punches (not claiming he doesn't have balls he's tough as Hell....like Cintron, he believed into the hype of The Tijuana Terminator, something Mosley didn't do) but now he has seen Marg isn't indestructible I think he will return the favour and stop him.

When a fight is a total blowout there's no need for a rematch. However, if a fighter has shown new skills then it is. I.e Hatton vs. mayweather (though I have no reason to believe that Hatton could beat Floyd once out of a hundred, some fans would like to see it)

Basically, I think it depends on the situation.

If its a case of styles-make-fights, and the opponent so obviously has the Indian Sign over you as far as a stylistic advantage goes, then I wouldn't recommend avenging a loss

However, if a fighter/trainer thinks there is a better than average chance, following adjustments, to set the record straight then I would say it is a good idea; an immediate rematch or possibly one fight inbetween as a confidence builder.

Hopkins has tried to avenge his loss to RJJ but was never able to make the fight happen, he even agreed to move up in weight for it. Fact is, Hopkins TRIED just like Hatton is trying to lure Mayweather out of retirement for a second shot. Margarito hasn't done nor said ANYTHING about the FIVE(now six) that beat him.

I think Hatton wants the rematch to prove that Mayweather is in fact better than him. Granted, that fact is pretty clear, but several things went against Hatton in that fight that gave him something to cling to.......

He would rather be knocked out again than leave it hanging in his mind I guess.

    999/1000 Floyd beats him IMO.
