What's all this fan base BS from Hatton + Mayweather?

Cotto and Witter are firmly established at #2 in their respective divisions, and obvious matchups for Mayweather + Hatton. I hear the same tripe coming from PBF + Hatton:

"They need to have some big fights, they need a bigger fan base".

What a lame excuse. If these two duckers are the megastars they believe themselves to be they'll bring the fans in on their own, at the gate and on PPV.

It's patronising BS that these two come out with. Patronising to Cotto, Witter and the fans.

Its even dumber that Floyd says Cottos fanbase is not good enough considering the fact that he offered to fight him 3 years ago

BTW Mayweathers fanbase is for ****, most people watch to see him lose. He is a draw, but he does not have a big fan base

Whether u like it or not, Mayweather fan base is huge now. Ever since he fought DLH and did the dancing with stars, and now WWE, everybody knows of him. It's all about exposure, he's gotten that in the last 2 to 3 years. He's a house hold name in the game now.

Mayweather doesn't have that many fans. Hatton does.

It is two very different scenarios.

One thing - has Mayweather ever been made an offer to fight Cotto?

It's a more relevant criticism with regard to Witter than Cotto. Cotto's title defences at least top the bill. Witter is approaching his third defence of the WBC title. He headlined on one of them, where he failed to sell out a sports centre in his own backyard, whereas the other two were undercard fights (and not exactly on stellar bills).

It's not the be all and end all, of course, but the question is always 'what do you bring to the table' and Witter cannot claim to bring fans.

Both of these clowns are pissing me off, I'm a big Hatton fan but I cant excuse him not fighting Witter, it needs to happen.

Floyd is worse with his cherry picking however, Hatton likes a challenge, he took on Floyd in his back yard when 90% of the world knew he'd be horribly out classed by the bigger man... but he did it anyway... so the Witter debacle is more puzzling than anything.

I dont disagree with the point you make but I am more intrigued to know that while he knows Hatton is not interested, why Witter is not chasing the other top guys ??

There are plenty of other fights out there for him that would be his biggest win but he is happy to keep calling Hatton out and fight second rate fighters.

If Hatton retired tomorrow Witter would be Fcuked !!!

And for the record i'm a long way away from a Hatton fan.

No idea buddy, this is what gets me, takes on the best p4p fighter in the modern game and okay, he loses, but how he can use the "no one knows Witter" excuse is beyond me. It's not Witter the fans come to see, he's like a UK version of Oscar, so he'll sell out nearly any stadium world wide regardless of his opponent. He obviously hates the guy and there must be some other underlying beef between the two of them...

On the other side I guess Hatton doesn't need Witter, he's going for legacy and money, which he wants the big names, so I think risk and reward comes into it, but like I said in the previous paragraph, the risk is irrelevent as he'll always be rewarded... and handsomely, simply because of who he is and his popularity. He was the crowd fav against Floyd in his adopted home town, I think the only reason people go to see Floyd is in the vein hope he loses, as his PPV buys etc aren't that great without a popular dance partner... so really, I dont see a reason not to fight Witter, hell, he should be wanting to shut Witter's mouth, they clearly dislike each other

I hear you. The only thing I can say is that Hatton hates him so much, he is denying him the biggest fight in his career. I dont wanna make excuses for Hatton, I only say this because Hatton is not a ducker like floyd is, so it is weird that he is doing it.

There are a lot of reasons Hatton is ducking, and its not because he's 'scared' per say, rather he is worried the hype will be derailed

    - Witter's style is poison for him, a cautious, unorthodox, powerful counterpuncher. Can switch southpaw, Hatton is horrible against southpaws (see Collazo/Magee)
    - If he lost this fight, he would never have got a fight with Mayweather, a big part of the promotion was "undefeated". If he loses it now, he might not get a rematch with Mayweather or a easy payday against Pacquiao
    - If he loses the fight, he loses a lot of credibility with it. He proclaims he never fought Witter because hes insignificant, but everyone will know what was up if he lost

Floyd ducked Witter at 140, of course, according to Witter. So did Cotto (though Witter turned down a fight with him at 2 weeks notice), but that one doesn't matter because Witter says he will knock out Cotto when they meet next year.
