after Taxes and paying off Manager and Trainer. I assume the promoters handle training expenses and transportation and take their cut from revenue generated from the bout . What are the standard percentages for trainers and managers?

Curious to gage how truly stupid you need to be to end up broke, after a career at the top when all you really need to know is the principle of intrest, to be set for life.

Depends what tax rate they pay, remember alot of people avoid tax as much as possible.

If I do it for the UK, if you are paid as a person, you are taxed nothing for 10k, 20% till 40k 40% till 150k and 50% after

    2.475m would go on tax

However as most big boxers have their own 'promotional company' they are taxed 24% of their profits, so therefore they would lose a bit less than a million.

Then you got to consider how much they pay the manager, trainer etc.

    It'll be different for everyone.

Depends if he is self promoted or not. A self promoted fighter will make much much more. Oscar De La Hoya said when he was under Top Rank he only received a little over $300,000 for each million he made after taxes, expenses, and the Promoter taking his cut so that would be a little more than 1.5 million on a 5 million payday after taxes and the promoter takes his cut.

These days fighters are getting smarter and more efficient with their pursue keep, I reckon fighters are keeping 65-70% and then getting taxed on that.
But the ones at the higher level dont need to give 10% to their trainer.
e.g when Floyd fights and gets $40 million I doubt roger gets $4 million, instead probably gives a fixed fee to golden boy and roger etc, probaby keeps $37 million for himself.

...self promoted fighters are a bit of an oddity aren't they? K2 for example need to then pay for the likes of the other fighters on the card and the venue...but they will take part of the advertising pie

From 5 million they probably get 2 or 2.5 million. Not only after paying taxes, but other expenses, like trainer, etc.

    Good thread!

I recall reading reports that Don King would hand his fighter a briefcase full of money with the caveat that it would be easier and simple to do it that way as opposed to the fighter recieving a check drawn from a financial institution that would then fall under the scrutiny of the revenuers.

In short; King double talks the fighter and hands him a minisclue portion of what he was owed and the fighter seeing the cash in front of him would invarible take the deal. The example was sonething like a 250K cash payoff on a purse of like 2-3 million.

The example given above with Tucker is probably more accurate, about 40%. Although more savy fighters can probably keep upwards of 60%.

Top Rank took 30% from Oscar de la Hoya in the late 90s. I don't know if that's still common, but when you take into account other expenses, trainers, and taxes it might only be 30-40% take home to the boxer.
