Been looking through some stats of the current top ten heavyweights in the world to see their last recorded k.o wins , actual k.o wins not tko it makes for grim reading looking at opposition etc. Thoughts, Tyson fury 2013 Cunningham Anthony joshua 2016 Charles Martin Deontay wilder Ortiz 2019 Dillian Whyte Chisora 2018 Povetkin Price 2018 Ruiz jr Devan Vargas 2018 Luiz Ortiz Travis Kauffman 2018 Joseph Parker Alexander Flores 2018 The era of Lewis, Tyson , Klitschko's etc seemed to be able to k.o world level fighters with a single punch apart from wilder none of the others seem to have the equaliser What's changed???
To be fair AJ did a decent job of Povetkin. Wasn’t a ref jumped in sort of thing, hurt him very badly. Also Ruiz did give AJ a good beating but get what you mean. Tyson would have had him unconscious
PEDS changed the landscape plus double chin fighters winning World Titles - New York 1 June 2019 the latest example.
Better strength and conditioning? Nutrition maybe? (Im referencing chin, better recovery) Never noticed that stat in all honesty, somewhat surprising. Most probably a number of factors
Part of it is arguably down to the refereeing. They are much more likely to jump in and stop a fight these days if they see a fighter in trouble. As pointed out above with Joshua, he pretty much bingo’d Povetkin, Whyte and Klitschko but they all go down as TKO’s.
Think a lot of its down to how much they analyse their opponents nowadays. A lot of training camps are basically made up of working on nullifying anything the opponents good at. So if an opponents got say a dangerous left hook...they work a lot on him not getting it off on them etc. Years back they mostly worked on improving their own skillset...now its more about how do we nullify what the opponent does well. They do that by watching hours of tape of the opponent. Watching patterns/setups etc. Then get to work on finding something that works to nullify the opponents strengths. Makes it harder to knock guys out at that level when the opponent knows pretty much everything your going to do.
Thought the Whyte v Povetkin fight was quite relevant for this thread for the OP. Povetkin’s win goes down as a TKO despite him totally icing Whyte before he even landed flat on his back because the ref didn’t do the count.
Paddy Power never paid out on the KO and many a boxing casual PPV buyer seething with rage having no idea what a TKO was.
