    Just looking at the P4P#10....

None of them can jab. Mayweather can, but he doesn't use it as often as he could. Dawson maybe...

But other than that, none of them!

the ring p4p list is very strange now anyway. Danaire at 4 position is absolutely ridiculous. JMM and Floyd have good jabs Dawson also. I haven't watched Caballero and Wonjongkam a lot so I can't tell about em

The funny thing is when guys use it they start winning a fight (ie: DLH vs. Floyd, Cotto vs. Pac) and when they abandon it they go downhill. I dunno, maybe it's easier said then done? My thinking is if it's working, stick with it.

I was just thinking about making a thread on this, based on comments some members made in another thread, where they were bemoaning the loss of classic arts such as the jab, and good, dedicated body-punching.

The jab is actually my favourite punch. Even when I'm just walking around the house I'll throw it out here and there, loving the feel of how quick and compact it is. I'm honestly baffled at how so few fighters seem to really use it to great impact these days -- the man in my avatar had a great southpaw jab that would have bothered the hell out of Floyd. The jab is such a diverse punch...you can use it defensively, as you back away, you can use it as you come forward, to set up a bigger punch, as Shane did to Floyd, you can use it as you step to the side, to confuse the other guy and keep him off balance, etc. A good jab is like a fencer's blade, and is just lovely to watch.

Great body punching is another lost art, but I guess that's a subject for another thread.

I love watching Floyds reflexs after someone jabs at him.. Then they can seem to get away from his jab.. Pin point accurate counter punching perfect for the jab.

Some fighters will never master it ,its the first punch you learn and after your 5th fight,if you haven't learn how to use it the ring..then oh well...lots of fighters know how to jab very well on the heavybag ....but a heavybag always moves the way you want it too.

Some guys are just so fast that they don't need to jab.

Peopple dont want to see no jabs they just want to see slugging! Big over hand right, right hook, left hook, pressure, pressure come forward!

Plus it takes discipline to master throwing an effective jab. Boxers rely on other attributes to win fights now, strength, big punch etc Then wonder why they couldn't win vs someone who could handle their style!

    :patsch

No one in the top ten p4p is faster than Floyd and he uses one. Every complete boxer needs a jab!

    Does he?

All of Williams sloppy punches blend into one for me, I'm never sure what he's throwing and I'm not sure he does either.

So many become counter punchers that a jab is no longer effective. Most throw fake jabs now. It's a light jab that allows your opponent to counter punch so you can counter punch him yourself.

body punching and jabbing disappeared probably because of how useless they are in the amateurs. either you get into an all out head hunt, or try to box someone and get out pointed.

Imagine if PW actually committed to snapping out a stiff Larry Holmes type jab at long range all night... :admin [longer arms than Klitschko!]

He might be a little more boring,,, but a hell of alot tougher to beat.
