Bottom line is still that Floyd needed to have faced all those guys he's refused to face in order to say with such certainty he would've beat them. I'm absolutely certain that if Floyd had never faced Castillo (easily his toughest match and one many say he lost/I'm not one of those, but it was definitely a helluva battle for him) but if he never faced Castillo, his fans would laugh at anyone saying he should have. They'd explain, through analysis of Floyd's untouchable skills, that Castillo was just nowhere near Floyd's level skill wise, and would've have shut out, if not KO'd. That's precisely why people have to hold Floyd accountable for failing to face so many of the top guys.
OK. In that case I think waiting for the opportunity to counter could be a long a fruitless exercise. Even if one or two opportunities came along and were successfully exploited, it's unlikely that they would be enough to win you the bout. Despite the mix up in the terms "counter", "counter punch" and "counter puncher", conquering Mayweather through successful countering or counter-punching would required the skills of a counter puncher, surely?
Im pretty sure floyds reach and heigh advantage was non existent in that fight. Castillo was actually one of the few guys who actually used his head to box smartly with mayweather. He was patient but when he got his chance he would take it. The other thing is, mayweather has put himself on such a high pedestal that he probably wont be able to back it up. I mean seriously who could he fight to back up the notion he is the greatest of all time.
Its boxing 101. If mayweather throws a jab theres an oppurtunity to counter, if he lead with a left hook make him pay. You can also make oppurtunities for your self using feints like both mayweather and pacquiao do. The difficulty pacquiao will have with mayweater is that he isnt a one style fighter. We have seen him as the brawler, the counter puncher, the boxer and even the slickster. His preference though is counter punching as it allows him to hit someone with nothing in return and make the most impact.
Since Floyd has been at the top, there has never been a counter puncher who could counter punch better than Floyd. And during his remaining 2/3 years in the sport, we won't see one either! So talking about countering Floyd, is a futile task to say the least. We're never going to get the chance to witness Floyd in with a better counter puncher. Simple as that
It's no longer who he could fight. It's who he should've fought already. And those names I've already mentioned. He could've fought Tzsyu, Cotto, Margarito, Clottey, Berto, Williams, Mosley years ago, and Pacquiao, to name a few. Instead of Tzsyu at 140, he fights two guys at welterweight that Tzsyu destroyed at junior welter. When choosing which legend to face between DLH-Mosley, he chose the loser of their bouts. When making his comeback, he faces the loser of JMM-Pac And three years after DLH, he finally faces 38-year old Mosley when the clear mega fight would've been Pac. Fighting a few of those guys would have at least proved he was the greatest of his era, but he didn't do it. So there's no mentioning him as GOAT. That notion will be a joke in a few years.
Bait Mayweather and counter him as he tries to do that himself. It's how Mosley landed that shot on him; they traded and as Mayweather tried to land a counterhook, Shane landed the overhand right. He can't see those types of shots, and those are the type that hurt you. That chin exposed when he leans in to counter a jab with a super quick straight right and duck after is right in line with Pac's left.
Please guys, stop this notion of countering Floyd! Any one that tries to do this, will be made to look stupid (see JMM fight). As far as my memory recalls, Shane's first right was from a nice little feint (which is far more effective than trying to counter him). The second right, which yes could be considered a counter, was a one off! Floyd made a rare mistake of leaving himself prone to Mosely's right (over the top) when throwing his own jab. Chances like these occur very few and far inbetween - in other words, almost never!
Possibly Vernon Forrest, my current avatar especially at 147. He was a technical fighter, threw accurate punches, rarely made mistakes in the ring, and had a great jab and even Roger said he'd give Floyd problems on a video I can't find unfortunately. I see 147 versions of Leonard & Robinson giving him hell and maybe stopping him. I think Floyd will retire for good undefeated but nonetheless I'm a Forrest, Mosley, Sugar Ray Leonard, Sugar Ray Robinson and a Floyd fan. Of course, Mosley is my fav fighter lol.
Boxing 101 is nice in theory, isn't it? As I have implied before, waiting for Mayweather to do something with a view to countering him would be fruitless in practice. Forcing the fight is the only way to pressure Mayweather into any type of action he is less comfortable with or encourage him to make mistakes.
Castillo beat him or at least made it very close and he wasn't a dominant LW. It's possible but Floyd's defense has gotten better since then.
