Apart from the usual drivel about how fighters should retire after a loss, what do you think the next step for Parker should be following his loss to Joyce? I feel he needs to secure either a rematch with Dillian Whyte to settle an old score, or fight Hrgovic. Despite his loss, I saw some major improvements with his punching. He definitely needs to trim up a bit though as 255 was far too heavy for him. Thoughts?
Bakole fight would be good. But he needs to stay at that weight, if he wants to fight bigger punchers.
It's unfortunate and a little odd that he came in undertrained like that, since he had been reasonably active fighting reasonable opposition. I would say Parker, Zhang, and Hrgovic are the established HWs that we really need some more information on so I would like to see them fight each other. I suppose Ruiz and Wilder are also in that category but they exist in PBC-land.
I wouldn't say undertrained. Just that the weight and gameplan didn't work against Joyce. Personally I expected a much more mobile Parker to try and evade and outbox Joyce instead of trying to trade with him in the corner.
Whyte is a nice and easy one to make. Whyte is seriously on the slide and would allow Parker the chance to prove if he has actually Improved. He has been showing a lot more fire and determination recently. But clearly isn’t elite. Therefore, Whyte is a great option
Yeah, or if he could have had his old faster, snappier hands to trade better maybe the Joyce avalanche is held back a couple more rounds and it's a very different fight. I was going to switch my pick to Parker until I heard the weight and saw what he looked like. But it's a credit to Joyce. Not a lot of HWs have the technique to get someone in the corner and keep him there without throwing bombs
Work on his cardio, loose some weight if needed and change the style, like being more aggressive. Retiring is too early for him, but if he doesn't improve going the way he currently is won't make much difference if he retires now.
I said to my brother that he sounded like Tua near the end of his career before this fight. Talking about how he'd lost the passion but now it was back, it sounded to me that he was trying to convince himself as much as anything. I don't really see a path to relevance for him moving forward. He doesn't look fit, trim or particularly motivated. I'd expect him to go the Tua late career route and fight journeyman with increasingly long lay offs between fights, and probably pack it in by the time he's 33 or 34.
In terms of his next opponent he has options as he's a well known name that can draw some interest from fans still. Rematches with Whyte or Ruiz would be good fights but risky ones, another loss so soon after this crushing one may have people writing him off completely if they haven't already. I think he needs a better trainer. Lee did well preparing him for Chisora but his game plan for facing Joyce was quite frankly moronic. Trying to turn Parker into some big bruising puncher when his power has only ever been above average was clearly the wrong strategy and doesn't fix the bigger problem of Parker technical deficiencies which have prevented him from going further than he has in his career. I'd like to see him go back to the drawing board, retool and take a few easier fights to give him time to develop new skills such as counter punching. He needs a trainer that will get the best of his physical gifts and give him a style that suits him, neither Lee or Barry were able to do that and until he finds the right style from him I can't see him ever being a serious title challenger again. But I suspect economics of boxing will make him jump back into a big fight sooner than would be best.
He is not a big draw and wont get paid top dollar for whoever he fights next....a match up with a british fighter as part of the undercard to a bigger fight will get him a couple of extra quid. He aint winning titles now so its got to be down to the cash....im not sure he is motivated enough to have any meaningful career now
I've wanted to see Whyte-Parker II ever since the first bout. Parker beats him this time, quite possibly inside the distance. Heavier doesn't always mean undertrained. The gain was strategic in Kiwi Joe's case, though it didn't work out for him.
He'll go back to moving meth money for the drug cartels. Serving as Fury's sparring partner allows him to travel around the world and playing DJ at Fury's victory parties lets him into VIP clubs to meet new contacts. That's primarily what he's been doing the last couple years anyway.
