Ortiz won by more than a hair. Crawford win was that close though...I had Crawford LOSING to Madrimov tbh but it was close w lots of swing rounds
Since I had no desire whatsoever to relitigate who really won the match between Bud and Madrimov and I really wanted to make a point, I cast aside my personal opinion and went with the general consensus. But yeah, I agree... obviously, Madrimov shaded the match against Bud by a point. Ortiz won by a point, maybe 2. Vergil's performance was far more impressive and ballsier than Crawford's.
I won’t address the insult, but I’ll address the rest — I agree with it. He’s only had 13 pro fights. Yes, I know, he had like 9,000,000 amateur fights, but still. 13 pro fights and he is competitive with the very best. As I said in an earlier post — he’s very much got what it takes for a great career. And he showed courage and the ability to really throw down in the last one. just stop trying to fight the top guys immediately. I get why his team has him try twice, he’s damn good (insanely good for 13 pro fights), but they’re going to get his confidence and rep messed up. Have him start running through the guys one level down like a hot knife through butter — which he absolutely would do. He’s only 30. He’s got a good 5 years before age starts becoming an issue. Spend 2 of those wrecking everyone except the top guys, build experience and confidence, then go chase the big dogs for the last few years. Managed right, trained right, I don’t see why he couldn’t retire somewhere around 36-38, having at least won a strap, financially well set up, health fully intact.
He's still probably top 3-5 in the division. His fight against Vergil could've gone 115-113 either (I did have Vergil winning), or it could've been a draw. Not sure why there's even a question of "what's next", as if he stunk up the joint...................he was a hairs' breadth of winning. There are numerous options for him at JMW or MW.
A move down to welter would be a smart move. His team has said repeatedly that Madrimov isn't tight at 154 and could fairly easily make 147. He also needs to relax more and not be afraid to plant his feet and get into exchanges. I really like Madrimov but it's clear he hasn't shed some of his amateur habits which has hurt him in the pros. I do think he has the goods but he maybe needs to bring someone new into his coaching team or work on developing his offence off the front foot.
Perhaps he was just making excuses, but Hearn reckoned that Madrimov was 100% recovered from the bronchitis that knocked him out of the Bohachuk fight
Shoot, if he can easily make 147, that's where he should be fighting at and working on shedding some of his amateur habits. Not sure the guys at 147 would be able to hurt him. Virgil's a bigger puncher than anyone at 147 right now in my opinion, and if Madrimov was able to weather his punches he'd probably be able to walk down all the cats at 147..
People overrate amateur experience, it`s clear Madrimov has not been taught about post punch defense, which is why he`s so gun-shy.
He ran for much of that fight, just feinting and posturing, he tried to win by pot-shotting like it was an amateur fight.
