I haven't seen anything in the boxing media about KOvalev since a few days after his fight with Cleverly. Anybody know what's next for him? I'd like to see him back in the ring (hopefully on HBO) before too long.
I read that he may be showcased on the undercard of Stevenson's next fight against Bellew(if he beats Cloud tomorrow), which would kinda build up a potential Stevenson/Kovalev fight in early 2014
Kovalboxer.ru is the best place for info on Kovalev (a number of the articles are in Russian) if you can decipher some of the gibberish created by Google translate. Last I looked, as mentioned above there's the possibility of a fight on the Stevenson -Bellew under ( though I suppose it'd be more of a co-main) in Canada, though this would depend on 'Donis winning tonight I guess. La Bomba had been mentioned, but clearly has his hands full now, and Kathy Duva mentioned Fonfara a week or two back, though I think that was meant more as a fantasy event in Chicago with Adamek on the card too. In short, as far as I know, it's still up in the air, but the noises being made are very much that Main Events are trying hard to get Kovav back in the ring this year - and 'gainst a live oppoent.:good
What's next is everybody at 175 asks "who's sergey kovalev" All the anti white fans, which is most of ESB, will say he hasn't fought anybody, and that he's too slow to compete with the cream of the crop at lightheavy, and that he should stop hiding overseas and get an american trainer, but he fights in america and has an american tr- SHUT UP WHITEBOY!! He aint nobody.
kovalev is very good, i would just for once like to see him fight against someone who can hit back and is more durable than boone...i think cloud/kovalev would have been a better fight than stevenson/cloud....styles
to be honest kovalev ward would be interesting, most of kovalevs good punches are short power punched in numbers, i doubt ward can last with out getting hit and ko
he did fight campillo, which was a big step for anyone, and drilled him. Its not like people are tripping over themselves to fight him. He is dangerous and everyone knows it, and for a top guy to fight him there has to be adequate $$$. Right now, that does not exist unless he can get more mainstream exposure.
doesnt look there is too much out there right now. if i were kovalevs team i would try n get a showdown wit fonfara. and last time kovalev went to cleverly and fought him on his turf.. maybe he can do it again and knock fonfara out in chicago i believe thats where he is big could be way off tho.
Yeah, Braehmer's decent enough himself, but was Clevs mando for years and never got round to making the fight, in 3 attempts I think. I ain't sure of the reasons, but I'm sceptical of it ever being made. TBH I see Braehmer as about Bellew level, p'haps a touch better. I just can't see him doing any better than Segeis last 5 opponents.
I didn't know this either, but apparently there's a sizable Polish population in Chicago and Kathy Duva's dream fight involves Kov - Fonfara and Adamek - (Jennings?) in the windy city.
why does Stevenson get Cloud and Tony B? Kovalev should get Tony now, then stevenson vs Kovalev after that.
Nobody has ever heard of the fighter who is going to beat KOvalev. And if you have, it's because he trains for the olympics in a gym near you.:nono
Well, Tony is mando for the WBC, of course, if he was offered (and accepted) a Kov fight it would be for the WBO strap. I guess Bellew would have to weigh up his chances. I guess it could be worth it for him if his WBC mando status was guaranteed, but otherwise it'd be taking a big risk ( a bigger risk IMO) for a smaller reward. I believe Bellew loses to any of Stevenson, Cloud and Kovalev, but Cloud and to a lesser extent Stevenson have shown themselves vulnerable to guys who can box a bit. Now I'm not saying Bellew's a stellar boxer, but at least he has a kinda blueprint for the WBC champ. Also the Stevenson / Cloud win would bring the Lineal title, and (I believe) a bigger purse. I think this would be a good option for Sergei, specially if it were considered an eliminator for the WBC, but a bad one for Tony, unless he's supremely confident of beating Kovalev....not while he's already got the mando promised.
