This is true, but one sat down and put his wants on paper, and the other(Margo) did his stuff in the media, which is how his career has been built in the media.
It's pretty easy to call out only champs or name fighters and then claim they don't want a fight if they decline. He's barely beaten many top 10 ranked fighters @ 147, 154 OR 160. HIs biggest stake is at 147. Holding the WBO belt can hold him back. It hurt Margarito, and it can do the same to Williams. There are plenty of contenders to face from 147 to 160, if that's what he claims he'll take. And to be completley fair, Williams is only 1-1 vs. top 10 Welterweights. Quintana wasn't in the top ten until after he won the first. Maybe he should establish himself in one division before expecting people to rush into a fight w/ him.
It's called paying your dues. Look it up. Most fighters do that first. They beat top contenders consistently and WORK their way up to being able to call the shots. If you haven't really done much, why should people line up to fight you in the first place? At least when Margarito wasn't getting big fights he wanted, he was beating all the other WW contenders.
Kinda sounds like that who is he arguement that you detested so much when Mayweather said it... Boxing is funny, and sooner or later EVERY fighters avoids a fight vs a certain fighter, whats funny is watching those that condemn fighter A for it try and defend fighter B for doing the same thing:hey
He's trying to get Margarito cause its an easier route. If he beats "the man" then he'll be considered the man. All he would have to do is continue to be successful while defending his belt(s). I agree with your method, but Paul & team have different plans.
Difference is Margarito was paying his dues. He was beating top ten Ring ranked fighters before Floyd, and continued after. How is that the same as Wiliams being 1-1 vs. Ring ranked WW?
Margarito was the man because he beat many top WW's, and when Floyd retired, beat the top ranked guy in Cotto. He didn't live off ONE win like Williams is doing. And I like Williams, but he needs to realize as long as he jumps divisions, NO ONE will be obligated to fight him. But I am glad that he wants to unify 154, as he said he would do after Phillips. That's a good start.
No it isnt the first time that he pulled it. He pulled the same **** with Floyd, and Wright. That is just the thing, you cats ignore that stuff. He was offered the date that Judah had, he was offered a fight with Wright after calling him out and then they came back with that Margo isnt a MW bull****...Dude your dead wrong, and like I said its funny watching you guys try to defend him after being so hard on other fighters for doing the same things:bart
Dude he beat Cotto and Clottey and you act as if he ran the Gaunlet of Leonard, Duran and Hearns...Get over it Who is he fighting NOW
If he wants to unify 154, then Phillips is a good start. And after he can take another fight at that weight or go after Sergiy next. I dont think Forrest will wanna get in the ring with Williams. But if he wants to unify a division, this is a good start for him.
Fair points. To tell you the truth, the fact that Williams seems to have the appropriate style to beat Margarito (based on their fight), seems to influence people a lot, making them think Williams is suddenly an unstoppable force. He needs to prove himself, as all other talented young fighters do, if you ask me.
I dare any PW nuthuggers to name one top fighter that PW's beaten besides Margarito. 1, just 1. Like another guy mentioned, CQ was only a top 10 guy by virtue of beating PW. The guy's never even successfully defended a belt. IMO, no one has done so little to deserve such acclaim, and a P4P ranking! GTFOH! Who knew that all you need to do is call out everyone and their mother in 3 divisions, but not actually fight or beat them, to be considered great. He's done even less than Pavlik, pre-Hopkins. PW needs to show he can beat all types of fighters, not just guys that come straight in at a weight where he's so much naturally bigger than everyone else. The one slick boxer he went up against, the glass-jawed Quintana, made him look ridiculously amatuerish in his first title defense. If that's what small guys can do to him, I can only imagine what study chinned veteran like Verno Phillips at 154 is going to do.
