I'm sorting out some equipment for lifting at home and I've been recommended kettlebells rather than dumbells by basically everyone I've spoken to. Having never used them, what's the advantages over a dumbell? I've always thought of them as a bit of a gimmick.

If I was going to buy 30 or 35kg dumbells for benching, would I still want two kettlebells of the same weight? The ****s are mega expensive so I'd probably make some.

dont substitute them, use dumbells for you exercises such as bench press but kettlebells are good for other exercises, more fucntional type exercises involving the whole body

KBs are better for certain exercises, the same for others, and also you get a decent grip element going on. If I couldn't get a barbell/weights, I'd get a KB to start with. As I said in my PM you didn't answer in response to yours, you ****.
My mate has a sale on them currently.

Sandbags are also really easy and useful, but you can't do some pretty basic things with them.

If maximal strength is your goal, you can't really do any meaningful weight with deadlifts, squats, clean and press etc.
For conditioning, or odd strength lifts to complement your overall plan, they are great!

the deadlift is true in that you would never be able to grip such an amount however the squat you can go heavy by shouldering a large bag combined with a backpack

I can tell you this for sure though, that after being stagnant on barbell moves for quite some time, that after 4 weeks approximatley, that all my big lifts have increased - after doing this type of training alone- some significantly.

this is just my experience and imo the functional element of sandbagging is such a quantity that I could easily be satisified if all the gyms in the world just disappeared suddenly.

    I highly recommend it.

an additional note I also found that I could suddenly complete one legged squats and 1 arm press ups after thsi training also something that always aluded me.

Again I cant recommend enough giving it a good try out.

I havent lifted weights in over 5 years, they tightened me up too much and I wasn't able to throw punches very well. I have done strictly body weight exercises since, plus normal boxing work out and I still have my power but much looser and quicker. A coach recently introduced me to kettlebells and I was skeptical but they really have made me stronger without tightening me up to much and I gained explosive punching power

  14. Great for functional strength, for sports specific workouts but also to build conditioning for everyday movements. Assuming someone has an active work life and lifestyle. Still not a substitute for dumbells or barbells. in saying that i have used dumbells instead of a kettle bell on some workouts.

This thread is full of waffling and unconvincing explanations. I'm sticking with barbells/dumbells.
