Despite losing to McBride all that time ago back in 05, millions paid to see him in that exhibition. 54 years old, his last great performance could be classed as the Spinks fight, back in 1988, yet still has massive pulling power and appeal. Anyone care to make sense of it??
He's an all-time great heavyweight. There have been 10-20 of those guys in all of history. He was also the most famous, or second most famous, boxer in history.
He transcends boxing. One of a kind. So many remember how good he was at his best. Sentimental I guess.
He's a legend like no other living athlete. That's always a good start. Then it was well marketed with short youtube clips where he looked very good hitting the pads.
Yep I get that about him looking mean on the pads but still, it's a 50odd years old guy who s last few years fighting looked pretty bad. It's a strange thing tbh, not sure any other heavyweight could bring the crowd in like he does at that age.
His fights were very exciting to watch, whether you liked him, or not. People don't forget very exciting!
He has that special something. And this is coming from someone who's been annoyed at his hype for 30+ years. But even I was a bit curious as to what he would look like against Roy, and glad at how good he looked. I would never want to see him against a top pro, mind you.
He continues to fascinate people - I think everyone knows as a fighter he was finished years ago but as a personality he still captivates people. Those podcasts he does are a reflection of that.
This. Tyson’s personality whether as a young man or even as a long retired man in his 50’s just draws people in. The knockouts were great, but Mike’s unpredictable yet entertaining personality is one of a kind. Even Don King, who has had his difference’s with Tyson over the years said Tyson has a special kind of charisma like Ali.
My favourite thing about him is that he is verbally literate but also makes up his own words. Like Shakespeare.
A combination of an alltime HW boxing low in the early 80s, a fighters marketing and his ability to back it up im some way. The extraordinary physique helped too. Still not sure if some boxing fans get that, but 5'11" and lean 218lb is in fact so rare (BMI of 30+ or "obese"), that the internet is full of discussion if something like that exists without roids.
