I'm looking to find a decent place to train in the city. I was hoping some of you could share your experiences at some of Londons top gyms. In terms of pro gyms I have heard the usual suspects. Rooneys, Peacocks, Tko, London fight club. And then theres the amatuers, west ham, fitzfroy lodge, repton. But what is the main difference between these clubs. I'm interested in finding a lot of one on one time with a good trainer. this makes me sway towards finding a gym like peacocks or tko where I can seek out the likes of jimmy tibbs. what are do you think?
Depends what your aims are in boxing! Are you looking to box amatuer? Are you a pro? Or do you want to just do it for fitness?
I will prob base myself out of a amatuer club and but give a pro gym a go. maybe workout in both because i wanna box amatuer but want the benefit of working out with pros. I used to train at an amatuer boxing gym but it was full of real young youth boxers. I wouldn't mind finding a place with people my own age (23). More recently I have been fighting muay thai. That was out of a pro thai gym in hong kong. It was a great environment. People of a similar age, top notch sparring that forces you to improve quickly. I wanna find a similar environment in a boxing gym. Also, I'd like to know the structure of training in a pro gym in london. In my muay thai club it was an open gym whereby you'd swing by, workout with thai trainers and find others to spar with/ hit the bag. This suits me well. Whereas amatuer boxing gym was more of a class. rotating you from different stations. sparring when the trainer tells you to. more structure, less freedom. whats your experience training in these places? can anyone share the kind of training structure these famous gyms in london have? thanks
The gym I go to has everything you are looking for, unfortunately it's in Birmingham. I don't think most ABA gyms have the approach you refer to, it's very structured and tailored towards the 'blue eyed boys'. Make your gym choice wisely, find somewhere that will get the best out of you despite your age, people don't realize that you could have 11 years in the Amateurs, that's a long time.
Has anybody trained at the real fight club or rooneys. Rooneys sounds good, as I heard terry edwards is a trainer there. Can you share your experiences? I'm going to head up there at some point. Does membership to one of these gyms mean that you can workout with trainers or are they like some gyms whereby memberships mean that you can use only their bags while they try to sell you over priced personal trainer packages so that you can get time on the mitts?
It sounds like you have a shopping list of things you want from a gym. Are you going pro, am or just to keep fit? In most gyms the trainers will give you more attention and help when you turn up on a regular basis and make an effort. Eons ago when the Earth's crust was still cooling I used to go to Lynn ABC. Small, shabby and had pleanty of people to drop me with rights to the solar plexus. I'm not sure what you're getting at but here's a list of amateur clubs in London. Just find your nearest one, walk through the doors and see if it's ok. If not check out another one. http://www.abae.co.uk/aba/index.cfm/clubs/club-finder/
haha yeah, sorry i seem pretty fussy. The main point of this thread is for people to share their experiences training at londons top gyms. I used to compete for an amatuer club a few years back so i know how things work there. However, I have never been to any of the (pro) gyms like rooneys and real fight club. I wanted a little insight into how they do things. cheers
What's your issue of structured training? Surely if you have a very good coach, he's probably beter at planning your session than you are? I've been at a gym where everyone walked in, sparred, and then did their thing (and i had boxed for a while at that stage), and gyms where it was structured, and so long as the trainer knows what he's doing, I found I learned more in the latter environment, because you don't just do what you like and are good at, but have to focus on other apsects of your game.
your analysis is correct, i do agree structured learning is more effective. just with work i prefer to have the freedom to train when i suits me
