What's the closest, most difficult fight to score you've ever seen?

Just re-watched Juan Manuel Marquez vs Marco Antonio Barrera, and after about round 8 I just gave up trying to arrive at a decisive verdict on each round (the closeness of it being demonstrated by the fact Compubox showed MAB throwing 529 and landing 204 (39%) and JMM throwing 529 and landing 203 (38%) by the end of round 9).

This was the first time that I can remember having such a difficult time scoring a fight when actively trying to score it. In every way, this was razor-thin. Even when one fighter actually managed to win a round decisively (Marquez in R7), the other fighter managed to put a dampener on it (Barrera getting a perfect KD in that same round before Nady made a mess of it).

Before this, I had scored a draw before (Taylor-Hopkins 1) and I've had fights where I've had only a one-point margin of victory (Martinez-Williams 1 to Martinez by a point), but each time I've been able to give a verdict on each round and feel comfortable with my final card.

    I just didn't feel this with JMM-MAB.

What did you think of that fight, and have you ever found a fight too difficult to score?

    :bbb

PS: Marco Antonio Barrera has now increased in my estimations, because he was significantly further past his prime in that fight than JMM was, and still made it that close.

  2. Pac vs marquez 1 and 2 very close fight with2 very close rounds. I scored them both for pac very close though and wont argue with people that have it a close marquez win or a draw.
Williams vs martinez was close ad well, draw for me.
    Also ali vs norton 2

wright vs taylor i found to be very hard to score, i ended up giving the fight a draw. It was hard to determine who won each round, the defense and accuracy of wright or the non stop onslaught of taylor

    Mares - Perez

I reached a score eventually, but I found nearly every round to be very difficult to score. A cracking fight though.

hmmm, good thread. let's see, hagler/leonard has always fit into this mould for me. same as lewis/mercer (though i always score it for mercer the actual score varies)

like the shout out to both hopkins/taylor fights

Pac vs Marquez 2: was really difficult because each the rounds were so close.
Mayweather vs Castillo 1: People have different opinions about who won the fight. Real close fight. How you scored it depends on how you judge fights.

I thought Dela Hoya -Whitaker was extremely hard to score.

Spoon vs Holmes was not that easy to score either imo, despite what some people would like to believe, that Spoon, Whitaker won their respective fights clearly.

I agree with you that Compubox means nothing when it comes to scoring fights, but it is still an interesting little gimmick, especially when it reports two near-identical scores after 9 rounds. That must be extremely rare, if not unique.

very much so but it's also the validity of the scores themselves the worst i saw was oscar/mayweather but the punches they count seem almost arbitrary

What a pain in the ass to score.
