On the bright side, it is huge step up compared to JMM-John, that fight was not even aired on national tv let alone PPV
i agree with divac, nate campbell and juan diaz aren't even close to being great boxers. neither is joan guzman, and i don't agree with him that juan manuel marquez would get beaten by him. anyway, if Pac was the guy fighting Casamayor, PPV buys would have reached above 300K. part of the turn-out would owe to the fact that many delusional boxing fans would count on casamayor to beat pac, knowing how they underestimate him. :yep
I understand all that, but that should be the promoters concern, not a fan's problem. This content is protected I see things differently, all what I want is the best fights being made. If a PPV sells well, then good for them, but if it doesn't..... should I care? I think the promoters should care...... The most important question is..... Is there any need for all these PPV fights, eventhough we know that many of them aren't worth, but they still go for it as PPV?
The problem is that alot of times promoters and/or fighters use ppv numbers as an excuse / reason not to fight a certain fighter, even if its the best fight out there. Like Floyd did with Margo, and there's plenty of more examples. They say "he cant draw", or "nobody knows him", and things like that in order to justify fighting a softer touch who maybe has more exposure. So they let money make the decision, and their fans say "my boy is supposed to get paid", and repeat silly ass lines like "if it dont make dollars it dont make sense" and crap like that. I look at it this way. If the Patriots win the AFC, and the Panthers win the NFC, I dont think anyone would approve of the Patriots saying "The Panthers cant draw flies, so we want to play Dallas in the Super Bowl instead". Cause its all about money, right??
you shouldn't put Guzman on the same level as JMM and esp. not as Pacquiao. He hasn't accomplished anything to deserve that type of accolade. While both Pac and JMM were huge favorites in their fights, Guzman vs CAmpbell odds were much shorter. And its not just because CAmpbell is better than CAsa and Diaz at this point
BINGO. I have no problems with promoters and fighters using that as an excuse to duck another boxer, but it really pisses me off when I hear/read in this or another forum, a bunch of huggers (they call themselves FANS) applauding and going for it. I can't believe that there are many fans who actually behave like promoters just to justify their favourite boxers, especially when situations like you mentioned occur. I know, I have heard many times the same stupid expresion..... 'He doesn't draw flies...."
Well, considering some of the numbers being kicked around here, yes. I am glad to hear the numbers you posted. As I am not in the industry (have never made any kind of claim of expertise or even competence in the business of boxing) and am just a lowly fan, while quite capable of multiplying 100 thousand by 50, I have no knowledge of distribution fees, liability insurance, transportation, condoms and lubricants for those that require fluffing and/or those being fluffed, mordida or any other associated costs. So. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I hope the boxers and promoters do better their next outing. :good Allow me to restate; I'm glad to hear that the magnitude of the disaster that was GBP's PPV featuring Juan Manuel Marquez vs Joel Casamayor is less than that which was being opined on this here forum. Further, I hope that the guaranteed purses of the combatants were nominally sufficient to compensate them for the excellent entertainment that I (and hopefully the 100,000 + other consumers) so enjoyed. Ok?
Guzman is a good boxer to me.... if you disagree, then fine with me, that's your opinion. It is irrelevant if Pac and JMM were huge favourites and Guzman was favourite, but not by the same margin..... the fact is that he was favourite as well, and wasn't me who decided that. He might not "deserve that type of accolade", but when it comes to H2H matches accomplishments are not the only element we should look at........ at the end styles make fights. Guzman has a good chance to beat Pac and JMM.... it doesn't mean he will.....
Guzman has the skills and size to give JMM and PAC trouble, maybe even defeat them but at this point he's not even on their level, accomplishment wise!
And thats where we disagree. I have a BIG ****ing problem with that. Most of the time, we are talking about fighters who are ALREADY millionaires. When is it enough? Does DLH really need another $50 million, and if he wants it, why not fight Margo for it? That would be a reasonable fight. I just get so sick of potentially great fights not getting made because there's 50 cents more to be made in a much lesser fight.
And who said Casamayor and D. Diaz where great? We are talking about J.Diaz and Campbell here. And the reason why most people thought the 135lb division where weak was NOT because there were no great fighters at that time. It was weak because it was being dominated by 1 champ(J.Diaz) and that most of the fighters were B-level and C-level fighters. And let me get this straight, your only reason why Juan Diaz and Nate Campbell are not great LWs is because the SFWs that are moving up are favourite to beat them? No offense but that's a pretty narrow-minded reason. Just because someone is a favourite doesnt mean the other guy is not great. Case in point -----> Pac vs JMM. Favourite is just that... favourite. It doesn't decide who is great and who is not. If 2 great fighters fight, there's still gonna be a favourite between them. The reason why I consider Diaz and Campbell great LWs is because they have proven their worth at that weight and have had more and bigger success at that weight compared to the others AND the simple fact that they would be big trouble to every single LW out there and can beat them. Whether they are the favourites or not is completely irrelevant. You don't need to be the favorite every single time to be great(mind you that there were MANY people here who also picked Campbell to beat Guzman). That's my opinion of them.
