fight that means nothing n world terms just the win and how it was achieved being so rare danny Williams v mark potter in a british and commonwealth title fight danny Williams in round 3 or 4 completely dislocated his right shoulder the dislocation was as bad as you will see his right shoulder 3 or 4 inches below his left shoulder with Williams in visible pain anyone who has ever dislocated there shoulder will know its worse than virtually any break you can have and I have broken /toes/ankle/ribs/nose/arm/wrist/fingers but biggest pain I ever had was a dislocated shoulder/ it brings tears to your eyes as you have 32 muscles attached and yet Williams fought totally one handed taken blow after blow refusing to quit desperate to win the title and in the 6th he lured potter in close and let rip with a huge left uppercut ala rocky v clubber laing with everything he had on it and kod potter and won the fight sheer will and determination moreso than any fight I have ever seen and I have seen a lot.
Hagler over Hearns was one of them since Hearns was peaking and Hagler had to put on a superhuman effort to win and he did.. He put it all out there. A great performance. He was hurt and cut and he came through.
Wilfred Benitez vs. Antonio Cervantes has to be right up there. Big underdog, 17 years old against an all-time great in his prime coming off 10 defenses and some great wins. Lionel Rose-Fighting Harada is a big deal too. To go over to Japan still a teenager and box a masterful fight vs. a legendary champion in his prime is special.
In modern history I would go with Ali vs Foreman Pacquiao vs Barrera 1 Roy Jones vs Toney Because they check all the boxes. Theres no questions about prime, weight or anything else and were completely dominant
My only prob w this is What if Hearns doesnt break his hand and instead of roundhouse rights can throw straight rts.
I'm going to go in a different direction what about Schmelings win over Louis 1st fight? Everyone thought Schmeling was being led to slaughter. But he said "I see something'. And he actually did.
I agree. I think had Hearns not broken his hand and he could have measured off some good rights he would have kept hurting Hagler, since his first few punches hurt him and that extra power might have kept Hagler off him, but maybe we would not have had the great round. The fight almost overshadows who won. It stands the test of time. Great fights do that. .
Ray fought his fight. Ray was in his range the whole fight. Duran could beat anyone when they are in his range. He was rarely hit clean and he countered beautifully. but if you stayed out of his range he could be ineffective at the higher level. Hearns was so rangy, he just nailed Duran and Duran could not do anything added with the speed.
