I think a boxer-puncher is bad news. Take a guy that is well rounded and with a good grasp of all facets of the game, including defence, and give him a grenade of a punch. Examples are Golovkin, Hagler, Canelo, Wlad Klitschko, Kovalev, Hearns. It's troublesome for obvious reasons. Not only is a good boxer hard to beat at the best of times, but now he has bombs that you have to worry about as well. They have the option of adapting to what you do by pressing the nuclear button. Eg: Wlad vs Pulev, Hagler vs Hearns etc.
You could probably include Corrie Sanders in that list too. He was really quite a good boxer in his younger days, and as he got older and slower he seemed to come to the realisation that if he knocked them out early, he could play golf sooner ...
Interesting question. I guess whatever Roy jones junior was doing in the 90s. The fighters I think of as most dominant and seemingly impossible to beat usually could be described as unorthodox, relying on supreme physical ability to do things most boxers cant do and therefore their opponent hasn't trained for. Ignoring those special cases, then to me the hardest style to beat is a defensively sound pressure counter puncher like james Toney, money may, and lw duran.
That's a fair criticism. He did in some fights though and it shows what might have been. Against Mike Dixon he rattled off 6-8 jabs in a row, just beautifully.
In our family we call them ADAs (Adaptable fighters). These are guys who can, at times, Box, Slug, or Swarm. I realize the style's not accepted as even existing by most, but I really believe I've seen it in some fighters. I think Evander Holyfield managed it, at times, not early Holyfield, but as he matured as a fighter. More recently, I believe Sebastian Fundora could mature into an ADA. And I have seen others who almost fit that style at various times in their careers. I think Dempsey attempted it but never quite got there.
I think it depends on the competitiveness and makeup of the division at the time. I think all things being sound it's a pure boxer/counterpuncher who has pop/power, and a strong chinned technical pressure fighter.
A boxer-punching, counterpuncher with a good chin, defense & power (i.e Robinson, Charles, M Spinks).
I think that's dangerous. At 6 6 6 5 Fundora will never have great physical strength nor musculature to absorb punishment, particularly to his head or body. Attributes make up styles, so he should really be an out-fighter, but I haven't seem him fight yet.
