Ive asked this question in 2 other forums but no one seemed to have a clear answer, ive been told that we have pro trainers and boxers in british forum so im giving it a shot here.

so what's the lightest that you have to scale to compete as a heavyweight, or do you have to at all?

Theres no minimum, in theory you can weigh-in at any weight and still compete at Heavyweight.

There's no minimum weight in any weight division. A lot of people think of it as a psychological advantage to weigh in more. For example Danny Williams had weights strapped to his legs at the Klitschko weigh in.

not saying you guys are wrong but do you have any reference to back this up?

from what i understand you can be a featherweight and fight in the heavyweight division if you wanted to?

how would the athletic commission look at it? and if the heavyweight class is pretty much open to anyone how come there hasnt been a single fighter (in recent years) who ever weighed under the 200lbs fighting the big boys? In fact Roy Jones is probably the first guy since the ali days of heavyweights who ever stepped up and not pack over 200lbs

In theory this is correct but the commission is not likely to sanction a fight that they would consider a complete mismatch or dangerous

so unless a fighter weighs over 200lbs he wouldnt get a chance to compete eventhough under the rules he's fully permitted? what would be his options then, can he protest against it? what if he really has the tools and the zeal to compete but the only issue is weight, what then?

i mean looking at it from a promoters/managers point of view, as far as matchmaking goes if an undersized opponent wants to step into the ring with a heavyweight, i dont think any big opponent would turn down the offer to add an extra scalp to his record for an easy night's work. not a championship fight but a club fight. Provided of course that it's not a rediculous gap in weight. I think 175 and up you should be able to get in, it's been proven before.

Roy Jones was only slightly over 190 when he fought Ruiz.

I don't see why more cruisers aren't taking the chance at heavy, I mean, Adamek has beaten 4 HW's without too much hassle and is already in the Ring top 5.

Surely someone like Cunningham is capable of something similar?

No, what Icemax is saying is that theres no rules in boxing that would stop the Featherweight fighting in a Heavyeight contest just that, in reality, it doesn't happen because the weight difference is so large the fight would be a mismatch. The same reason that you don't see one legged men playing in the Premiership, theres no rule against it but it doesn't happen,,,,

There are plenty of examples of fighters weighing under 175 and fighting Heayweight fights (Carpentier, Walker etc), it happens less these days because the Heavyweights are a lot bigger than they were years ago.

    :thumbsup

I wonder if a Dempsey 185 v Willard 250 would get sanctioned today

I thought it was 200lbs+, at least for the past couple decades or so.

Strictly speaking thats the upper limit of the Cruiserweight division, not the lower limit of the Heavyweight division. The divisions don't have minimum weights, just maximums,

Is there any record of the lowest weighing contestant in a heavyweight bout?

No there's no minimum, but it's unlikely a bout would be sanctioned with a big weight difference. Even as far back as when Tommy Burns weighed in for his fight with Jack Johnson with bricks in his overcoat pockets this has been the way of things.

Joe Walcott was not far off Welter when he fought 180lb Joe Choynski. Alas, those were different times.

it indicates that you can only give away 4-7 pounds if you want to fight in the division above your regular weight class
