ABSOLUTELY! That's what turned me off the last 25 yrs.(and beyond) save the occasional great fight.
That's why I only visit the Classic Thread and then get beat down for saying you can't compare eras. I know, I can be headstrong. :tired
But Gannicus is right. I'm 62 and remember Dad taking me to the barbershop as a young punk and reading the Ring Magazine on the table before my turn.
Everyone knew who the top 10 contenders were and who was
    Champ.
    To amplify what Gannicus said:
Money grubbing has ruined the sport.
Eight divisions is enough unless you add Cruiser to the list. Can't make the weight? Move up or move down.
5-6 'Champions' in, what, 12-15 divisions? Here's what took the wind out of MY boxing loving sails about 15-20 years ago:
I'm not sure how many 'bodies' were out there but let's say Five.
    I read a 'contenders' list.
Out of 50 top ten contenders of the 'bodies' I only saw FOUR that were on every list????
Educate me guys, so we have 46 "top 10 contenders"?
**** on boxing, I'll stick to my tapes and exchanging tapes with die hard fans. No offence to you youngsters, it's just sad that you couldn't have been a part of the past and have to (along with myself) have to deal with this UFC c r a p that has replaced boxing in popularity. :verysad

No question the wattering down of the sport turned off many.

I wasn't around during the eight division/eight champions era.

I starting following Boxing when there were two world sanctioning bodies - The WBA and the WBC.

I think having two world bodies wasn't bad.

It increased the number of title fights just enough to pique the interest of the casual fan, and provided a plethora of action on free TV.

But, as time wore on, it just got more and more watered down to the point of being ridiculous.

Hi Saad! Good observation(should have stayed that way all things considered) but, even in the 70's, we saw the start of the downfall. Galindez and Conteh never fought in 1975, Monzon and Valdez finally fought when both were clearly past prime etc...
I remember how excited we all were closing in on the Leonard-Hearns fight! Closed circuit, ready to pay ANY price! Many may not realize that about three weeks prior, the 'bodies' suddenly clashed heads and said the fight would go on but it would be a "non-title" fight. My friends and I said "p i s s on this c r a p!" We're not going! Fortunately they sanctioned it at the last moment as a unification bout. :patsch
I guess I just want to go back to Friday nites when I was 8-9 years old when dad had Uncle Ray over and they ordered White Castles and pizza and I could stay up late with Dad and Uncle Ray and watch the Gillette Friday nighters: Griffith-Paret, Carter-Fernandez, etc....

Watching live on home TV Kid Paret's head bouncing off the metal ring-post via Emile Griffith's blows....when I could have been watching "What's My Line Game Show".

IIRC, Cornelius Boza-Edwards did a poo after Alexis Arguello hit him.

I forgot or never knew what the NBA was. But boxing was still screwed up back then.

So-called boxing fans urinating into cups and throwing them over Johnny Owen as he was taken away to hospital following his 12th round KO loss to Lupe Pintor. He died of head trauma a few weeks later.
