,,back in the days when the weigh-in was on the day of the fight, ike williams lost his lightweight title because he was so drained. many others but ike is the first one i thought of because he was such a superior fighter to jimmy carter before that.
I don't know how to post pictures but this was a suicide mission, Nowhere near the MW limit for nearly 3 years, Gilroy is asked to cut approx 10lbs in as many days for Cerdan, see picture(s) in the link - http://www.marcelcerdan.com/4.aspx?CategID=511d4240-5548-45a1-8a24-f33c78bbdb72&sr=0 - page 2.
Was in the corner of a fighter on a regional show about 5 years back. Was watching the undercard, and saw a lightweight enter the ring looking like a Holocaust survivor. I was unnerved immediately seeing his appearance before the bell rang. That fighter ended up being TKOed after the second round, because he passed out in the corner. I can't remember the name, but it was horrifying. The kid was a last minute replacement who must have cut the human limit of pounds in a weeks time just for a paycheck. Boxers are brave men that sometimes need to be saved from themselves.
Ralph Dupas was one. Hadn't been at 135 in some time but got the title shot at Joe Brown and boiled himself down to make weight. Rodolfo Gonzalez in the 1st Suzuki fight was another. Gonzalez was a fighter who was ultra-strong and could throw punches non-stop forever but he was like a rag doll out there. But the worst case of weight draining has to be Sot Chitalda. During his flyweight reign he consistently weighed in around 135 between fights. His trainer Charles Atkinson would say he could boil off 25 pounds off of him but that last 3 pounds was torture because there was absolutely nothing else to boil off. Scartissue
I remember there was a young Filipino fighter recently won the Super-Flyweight title, and in his first defence got a draw, and he didn't sweat until the last round! He ended up at 122lb after that fight and still looked weight drained!
Apologists, emerge! Such threads aren't possible without the likes of Duran - so I'm glad his name has popped up a few times already.In-shape and motivated to poke a green Davey Moore in the eye,but not so much when it comes to preparing against a devestating puncher and one of the very best in the world.
