i thought last night was a very risky fight for manny to take, he had a lot more to lose than he had to gain i think... like everyone else, i am stunned by manny and feel very very privaliged that he is around in my lifetime... although manny beat cotto all the way, my head was in my hands because i thought there was always the threat that cotto would land big on him at any point...and actually he did a few times and amazingly manny took it. i see two roads left for manny now....one leads to mayweather, and one to mosley... mayweather cannot refuse the fight now...he just cant...this forces him into a corner, his whole legacy will have a quaetion mark over it if he doesnt fight manny...people will say in years to come that he backed away from it. personally, i think mayweather could beat manny...mayweather is an atg, and, i dunno, based on styles, i dont think mayweather lets manny do his thing...i also wonder if its fair to expect manny to beat mayweather at all...although mayweather came through from lower weights, he is still naturally bigger than manny, albeit it not much, but he's also a league apart from anyone around him.. then you have mosley...which for mannys legacy must be tempting...as mosley is the proper champ at welter....he may be behind manny and floyd p4p, but he's the proper champ at welter... but, i also think, based on catchweights in contracts, that manny knows there is a ceiling to how far he can go up, and maybe he wont take on the big natural welters like mosley...cotto probably fitted the bill on how big of a man he feels he can take... either mosley or mayweather next will do for me...but, if mayweather beats him, does it do any damage to mannys legacy, like can manny really be expected to come from where he has and climb all the way up to welter and beat mayweather ?...i dunno.. anyway...i'm just thinking aloud here...
Outside of Mosley/Mayweather there is no one. There is talk of a JMM fight, but I don't want to see a 3rd JMM fight as it'll be pretty pointless at this stage of their respective careers. It'll add nothing to Pacman's legacy (although pacman may want to fight him as he feels there is unfinished business), and Marquez has no business above 135.
think berto beats mosley?...only other fight i can think makes sense...if berto wins and pac beats the true welterweight champ....although manny / floyd would be p4p no1 + 2...the proper welter champ would be the winner of berto / mosley.
clottey would be a difficult fight but it wont make much money. I said before clottey is a harder fight for pac than cotto. I made a thread to discuss it but nobody was interested. Other than berto/mosley or PBF there arent many other super fights out there. But you cant have a super fight everytime. He may want to fight a lesser guy like Paulie M and have a fight over in the phillipines for his home country.
Good valid observation - Mayweather will be heavily attracted to the immense amount of money 2 fights would bring to the table.
Manny has the WBO and to unify before he hangs them up will seal him as a very top great. Fighting and beating the winner of the Mosley vs Berto fight would seal the unification. Garanteed if PBF ducks Manny in the meantime, he will lose many fans and money. I believe if you hit PBF in the pockets, then he will take the fight. So much money can be generated for both to be content. Why the greed over who gets more will be the demise of this future fight. Again, the winner of the Berto vs Mosley fight and the incentive of unifying the WW belts would be the most sensible thing to do.
Unless Manny does a Cotto on PBF, then there will be no rematch. I truly believe it will be a much better match-up though.
Without doubt - their skills are incredible, but I believe Mayweather is the "once in a lifetime fighter". He is just more technical IMO.
my dream scenario....berto beats mosley in january...floyd beats say clottey {or someone of that calibere}...then pacquaio beats berto around april 2010 {better he beats berto as folks cant say mosley was old, and berto is unbeaten} this way pacquaio becomes the true proper welter champion...setting up one of the biggest fights in boxing history sometime at end of summer 2010. can any of that happen?, i doubt it - but its great to think about.
