I don't get McGirt's strategy tonight, so he wanted Sergey to box and use his jab??.... but whats the point of the jab if you don't follow it up with anything? Buddy took away Kovalev's biggest weapon in his arsenal, his right hand. huge mistake. Kovalev threw his signature straight right hand maybe 2-3 times the whole entire fight. I don't buy it that he was "afraid to leave himself open to bodyshots" like he said post-fight interview. Also, notice how happy Kovalev was at the end, and he said, right away, "yeah I'll be back and get all the belts, as if he wasn't brutally KO'd. something else could be going on. Did Golden Boy add another clause in the contract that he couldn't throw any power punches? on top of the rehydration clause, making Kovalev walk out first... like wtf... it's like bragging to people you wrestled a bear and won, but the bear was declawed, de-toothed, injected with sedatives, and held on a leash.
Golovkin couldn't land his right hand either. He knew it wouldn't land so he didn't throw it. It was probably the same situation with Kovalev.
at least he was trying... he was swinging and taking risks. Kovalev was just doing love-taps. is anyone rreally buying this, that Kovalev is all of a sudden this toothless impotent docile bear? yeah I get it he was KO'd 2 times before this... but come on
Two win a fight with just your jab at that level is a big ask . It'd wanna be the best jab in the world It'd wanna have a 9 out of 10 KO power success rate . It'd wanna be the fastest jab out there . An look AJ payed the price for to many Single left's fair few single right's power shots he thought had enough Oopf to stop Ruiz . Found out it didn't work this time .
Gathering points and hurting the opponent is the answer to the thread's question. Kovalev threw his right hand more than two or three times in the highlights package I just watched is my response to the OP.
Kovalev had nothing. All those pitty-pat jabs meant nothing. I didn't see one good punch from him the entire fight. The whole fight he looked like a stiff wind would blow him over
