I was looking through the August 1939 Ring Magazine and in the section "Timely Chatter from Great Britain" noted that Jack Croly of Millwall showed vast improvement defeating Red Pullen of Wales in a hard hitting CRUISER WEIGHT contest. The weights are unlisted but Croly is listed in Boxrec as being a Middleweight and Boxrec lists him as "Inactive".

If it's from 1939 it's safe to say that Croly is not only inactive from the ring but from the realm of the living.

Perhaps, I was trying to be positive after a long week. Boxrec is an amazing resource but the status classification is odd and their fighter rating convoluted.

Just change the name of the division to Heavyweight Classic and everyone's happy.

The cruiserweight division is required but the name of it isn’t. They are heavyweights now!

    Heavyweight should be called Superheavyweight.

If you want to watch heavyweights watch cruiserweights. If you want to watch Superheavyweights watch heavyweights. It makes no sense!

    Change the names!

But if you did that, what would it mean historically?

I mean, a lot of times today, people look at under 200 pound heavies of past era's as "not real heavies". And if the SHW division became a reality, would that somehow lessen the historical standing of say Ali, Frazier, Tyson, Louis etc?

If we didn't have a CW division talented fighters that are somewhere around 195-215 in the ring would have a harder time making a name for themselves and we would see fewer high profile fights between them.

Historically it would mean that the Superheavyweight division is the new one.

Historically it would simply mean cruiserweight became heavyweight because it did!

Cruisers used to be cruisers when they were 176-190. But now they are 220. And that’s not a cruiserweight. The 24 hour weigh in started all that. Guys who In the ring are as big as Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes was on the night. And they have to be called cruiserweight because the name is wrong. And that’s just wrong. The word cruiser is now defunct. They don’t exist. What was cruiser exists within the Lightheavyweight and super middleweight class. There is no need for s stop gap division for those guys anymore because there is at least one original division for them.

It is the true heavyweight who has been stranded. He has no original division anymore.

Historians will look back at Tyson vs Holyfeild as probably the last true heavyweight title fight until cruiser champions started to be called heavyweight champions and the Superheavyweight championship probably started with Klitschko vs Sanders as a new division.

In all these debates we call the new guys Superheavyweights because they are!

    195-224 is heavyweight.

    Over that is Superheavyweight.

The word cruiserweight is obsolete. The guys who fight on the night between 176 and 195 are officially fighting for titles at lightheavyweight or Supermiddleweight.

Well, guys around 195-200 lbs have a hard time making it at HW nowadays. And it's hard to sweat out 20-25 lbs to make 175 regularily. Some can drain 20 lbs regularily, but not 25 or more. And since those under 210 lbs very rarely are succesful at HW anymore it's good to have a a weight class where they can compete, since good fighters in the 195-210 (in the ring) bracket in most cases would be too big for LHW and too small for HW.

Even Usyk, who's probably around 215-220 lbs in the ring, isn't likely to win the undisputed HW title, imo, as he has done at CW. Having a CW division makes it possible for fighters in the ca 195-215 weight range (in the ring) to have more success and reach a bigger audience.

of course they do. 195-224 is a heavyweight but they fight at cruiserweight. Change the name. Over 224 is a Superheavyweight but their division is called “heavyweight”. Change the name. They are not heavyweights they are Superheavyweight.

They don’t need to do that if their weight class is given the correct name. If the guys in one division are heavyweights rather than Superheavyweights it should be called heavyweight. If the division called heavyweight has been taken over by Superheavyweights then it must be called Superheavyweight.

yes. This weight class has the wrong name.

He dosnt have to. Name Superheavyweight sized guys Superheavyweight and Let Superheavyweights fight each other. They are the new thing. Call the heavyweights heavyweight. That’s what they are. Usyk is a heavyweight. Cruiserweight becomes heavyweight. Cruiserweight means nothing now. Cruiserweight used to be the 178-195 guys but those men fight for the light heavyweight title. So the word shouldn’t exist anymore.

it would make it much more possible for guys today called cruiserweight to achieve more success and reach a bigger audience if they were called Heavyweight champion rather than cruiserweight champion. A simple name change. They are already heavyweights. Let’s make it official.

I Cannot believe all the major governing bodies in professional boxing went to all the trouble of changing the names of the light middle and light welterweight divisions without changing cruiser to heavyweight and heavyweight to Superheavyweight!

Things need to be in line with Amateur boxing. They don’t use cruiserweight so why does the pros?

Once the new generation of cruisers started to fight in the lightheavyweight ranks there was no need for the cruiserweight word to exist in professional boxing.

The thread question was if the division is needed, not if it's named right. I answered the thread question. But perhaps you have a point with a name change being a good thing. "Cruiserweight" is kind of a weird name. Calling it "Heavyweight", as they do in the amateurs, would be alright for me.

Yes we don’t need more divisions, but the sport deserves to have the right names for the divisions we already have. At the moment it is wrong to call men as big as 90% of the best heavyweights in history as being in the cruiserweight division. They are heavyweights, therefore that division should simply be called heavyweight.
