Yeah, same here. I didnt really have an issue with it, but in this case, more than in the Scott case, the referee could have waived it off.
I don't really have an issue with how he did tonight. Thought he did a great job staying out of the action. Except for some reason not listening to the corner and making Alvarado say it. that's not right. But during the fight I thought he was great.
Its not right for the ref to ask the fighter if they want to continue after the corner has already called off the fight. They should always listen to the corner first. Its the fighters corner's job to look out for his safety. By making Mike tell him instead of listening to the corner, is like throwing out a towel that has been thrown in and making the fighter quit themselves. Do you know how many fighters wouldn't have quit tonight? What if it was Fernando Vargas in there, and he tells the corner to get out of the way and he wants to ask the fighter himself, and Vargas tells him ya he wants to continue. nah..... a ref should always listen to the corner. Not to a warrior, many who (not Alvarado tonight, thankfully) would just as soon die in the ring before they quit.
did anyone think about the first cotto and margarito fight as they were watching this fight? similar to cotto the rounds alvarado were winning he was boxing using his legs and a lot of energy but even as ruslan was losing those rounds you can tell he was walking his man down applying pressure with body shots like margarito. and the ending was kind of similar.
